The low, guttural rumble grew louder, resonating through the air and vibrating beneath their feet. Kaelen pressed a hand to the rocky wall of the ravine, feeling the tremors intensify. Dust and pebbles rained down, making Seraphina instinctively pull her hood tighter around her face.
"What now?" she hissed, her voice tense with frustration and fear.
Kaelen didn't answer. His eyes stayed fixed on the creature above, its glowing eyes narrowing as the sound seemed to unsettle even it. The beast shifted uneasily, claws scraping against the stone as it retreated slightly, its predatory focus momentarily disrupted.
"Whatever it is," Kaelen finally said, his voice low, "it's worse than that thing."
The ground beneath them gave a sudden violent lurch, and the wall behind Kaelen cracked, sending shards of rock tumbling around them. He grabbed Seraphina's arm and yanked her away just as a large boulder crashed where she had been crouched moments before.
