The month on Augustolos had passed in a whirlwind of exploration and awe. Claudius, Vera, and Felix had spent their days visiting the grand palaces, military museums, and sprawling shipyards that powered the heart of the Empire's war machine. Each day brought new marvels: they witnessed the production of colossal dreadnoughts in the shipyards, saw the very first imperial warships preserved in museums, and walked through halls where the history of the Empire's greatest military conquests was enshrined.
But now, their time in the capital was over. The Imperial shuttle was preparing to land back at the Academy, and the trio's thoughts had shifted back to their studies—and the choices they would have to make in the year ahead.
As the shuttle touched down, Claudius couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. The second year at the Academy was when cadets had to make one of the most important decisions of their future careers: which division of the Imperial Navy they would eventually serve in.
The three main branches of service within the Navy were:
1. The Peacekeeping Forces – responsible for maintaining order within the Empire's vast territory, handling uprisings, protecting trade routes, and enforcing imperial law.
2. The Assault and Invasion Forces – the Empire's most aggressive military wing, designed for expansion, offensive campaigns, and large-scale planetary invasions.
3. The Border Defense Forces – tasked with protecting the Empire's outermost regions, securing the borders from alien incursions and defending against external threats.
Each branch required a different set of skills and mindsets, and Claudius knew that whichever path he chose would shape the rest of his career.
As they stepped off the shuttle and back onto Academy grounds, the familiar sights and sounds returned. The grand spires of the Academy loomed overhead, and the bustling activity of cadets from all classes filled the air. But now, things felt different. They weren't the same cadets who had struggled to prove themselves in Class C; they were on the rise, with new challenges ahead.
"I can't believe the first year is already behind us," Claudius said as they made their way to the dormitories.
Felix, walking beside him, grinned. "Time flies when you're stuck between exams, simulations, and dodging Andriu Stark insults."
Vera walked on the other side, her expression thoughtful. "This year will be even more important. Our performance in the second year will determine how we're viewed by the officers and professors—and most importantly, which branch we're fit for."
As they approached their new dormitory in Class B, Claudius reflected on the branches. He had always dreamed of being part of the Navy's elite forces, but now that the decision was looming, the choices felt heavier.
The following day, the cadets gathered in the Grand Lecture Hall, where the Academy's senior officers were scheduled to speak about the three divisions and what each career path entailed. The hall was filled with second-year cadets, all listening intently to the upcoming decision that would shape their futures.
Commander Roth Harren, a veteran of the Assault and Invasion Forces, took the stage first. His presence was commanding, and his deep voice echoed through the hall.
"The Assault and Invasion Forces are the tip of the Empire's spear," Harren began. "We lead the charge, taking new worlds in the name of the Emperor and expanding our reach. Only the most determined and fearless serve in our ranks. If you want to be at the frontlines, if you want to be the one carving new paths for the Empire, then this is where you belong."
His speech was followed by Commander Selene Vorna, a calm and measured officer who led the Peacekeeping Forces.
"The Peacekeeping Forces are the backbone of the Empire's stability," Vorna said. "We ensure that the Empire's citizens live in peace, that the law is enforced, and that order is maintained. It's not as glamorous as charging into battle, but it is essential. Without us, the Empire would crumble from within."
Finally, Captain Tiberius Rendell of the Border Defense Forces took the stage. He was older, his grizzled features speaking of years spent defending the far reaches of the Empire.
"The Border Defense Forces guard the edge of the known galaxy," Rendell said. "We face threats from alien species and unknown dangers that lurk in the dark. It's dangerous, unpredictable, and often isolated work, but without us, the Empire's borders would be breached. If you want to protect what's ours and face the unknown, this is the place for you."
Claudius listened carefully to each speaker. All three branches held their own appeal: the thrill of the Assault and Invasion Forces, the stability and order of the Peacekeeping Forces, and the sense of duty and adventure in the Border Defense Forces. But the decision wasn't easy.
Felix leaned over and whispered, "What do you think? Ready to make a decision?"
Claudius sighed. "It's not as clear as I thought it would be. What about you?"
Felix gave a shrug. "I'm leaning towards the Peacekeeping Forces. There's a lot of power in stability, and the Empire needs someone to keep everything from falling apart. Besides, the capital and its politics seem to be at the heart of that."
Vera, listening from the other side, added, "I'm still thinking. The Assault Forces are appealing because they're the most direct path to leadership and change. But the Border Defense Forces intrigue me as well."
They spent the rest of the day discussing their options, knowing that soon enough, they would need to make their official selections. The weight of the decision hung over them, as they knew that whatever they chose would have far-reaching consequences for their futures.
That evening, they returned to their new dormitory in Class B, where they were welcomed by their fellow cadets. The energy in the room was high as cadets from different backgrounds and skill levels came together to celebrate the beginning of their second year.
One cadet, Leona Marius, a top performer in Class B, approached them. "Congratulations on making it to Class B," she said, shaking hands with each of them. "You've already made quite a name for yourselves."
Claudius smiled and thanked her, still adjusting to the new environment.
Later, in their common area, Felix gathered them around. "I've got an idea," he said. "Before we throw ourselves into the second year and make life-changing decisions, how about we take a small trip?"
"A trip?" Claudius asked, curious.
"Yeah, just a quick one. We've spent a month in the capital, but we haven't really seen much of the galaxy outside the Academy or Augustolos. I have access to a small shuttle. What do you say we take a brief tour of some nearby systems? Get some fresh air before we make our decisions."
Vera raised an eyebrow. "And where exactly would you take us?"
Felix grinned. "Leave that to me. I've got a few places in mind. Just trust me."
Claudius exchanged a glance with Vera, then smiled. "All right, Felix. One last adventure before we get serious about our careers."
With their decision-making still ahead of them, they knew that this journey would be a brief but needed break from the pressures of the Academy. They were about to step into their second year, and the path ahead was filled with uncertainty. But together, they were ready for whatever lay beyond.
And so, with excitement and anticipation in their hearts, they prepared for one last journey before returning to the weight of their future choices.
