Chapter 69: Shadows of the Past

Returning to his quarters, Shenlong found himself deep in thought. The challenges in the Qin Clan would be unlike those he faced in the trials, where the only enemies were the harsh tests and his own limitations. Here, jealousy and rivalry lurked in every corner, and any weakness could be exploited. Still, he had a sense of peace, knowing he had the Clan Master's cautious approval, and perhaps, even his trust.

As he sat in quiet contemplation, the pendant around his neck began to pulse softly, as if reminding him of its presence. Since awakening its powers, the pendant had become a source of strength, but also a reminder of the mysteries surrounding his past.

Just as he was about to meditate, there was a knock on his door. To his surprise, it was Lan Mei, his childhood friend. She stepped in, her expression one of hesitant joy, mixed with a hint of concern.

"Shenlong," she began softly, "it's true—you're really back, stronger than ever." Her eyes sparkled with a mixture of admiration and relief.

Shenlong smiled warmly. Lan Mei had been one of the few who never turned her back on him, even when everyone else doubted him. "Yes, Mei. I've returned, and I intend to reclaim everything I lost."

She studied him, her eyes softening. "There are so many rumors, Shenlong. They say you faced a powerful Storm Wolf and survived… and that you've somehow grown stronger in ways we can't explain."

He nodded, his tone calm. "The trials I faced changed me. I discovered a legacy that was hidden within the pendant I wear—one tied to my origins. But I still don't have all the answers."

Lan Mei's face fell, and she looked away, hesitant. "Shenlong, there's something I need to tell you. When you left, the clan elders speculated… they thought your loss of talent was a punishment from the heavens, a sign of bad fortune. They even considered expelling you from the clan."

Shenlong clenched his fists, a flicker of anger rising in him. "So they would have abandoned me when I was at my weakest?"

She nodded slowly. "But it wasn't just because they doubted you. The Qin Clan has enemies, Shenlong. Some elders feared that your fall would attract unwanted attention from rival clans, and… they worried you'd become a weakness."

Taking a steadying breath, Shenlong met her gaze. "It doesn't matter. I'll prove my worth to everyone in the clan. Whatever challenges they throw at me, I'm prepared."

Lan Mei gave a gentle smile, though her eyes held a hint of sadness. "I believe in you, Shenlong. Just… be careful. Not everyone will welcome your return with open arms."
