"You sure you don't want to come with us, Grandma?" 


Grandma just laughed and nodded. All twelve of us plus Vin were gathered around her. She had just equipped us with food and blankets. All of our camping gear was in her garage since we only ever went camping with Grandpa.  


She smiled gently at Gem, who had been the one to ask if she wanted to go with us. "I never went with you before and there's really no point in me starting. You all be safe and enjoy yourselves."  


We all looked at one another, our eyes filled with worry. No one wanted to say it but Grandma was acting as if we should leave like we always had before, like nothing had changed since then. 


I never understood why she never joined us on these camping trips. She used to laugh and say something about her back but we all suspected that she wanted us to have this time with Grandpa, as if she somehow knew he would be gone before we knew it.
