The Ark drifted quietly through the cosmos, its engines humming softly as the crew prepared for their next destination: Ilvora, a planet orbiting a dying red star. Unlike the barren world they had just left, Ilvora hinted at the remnants of civilization—ancient structures dotting its surface, some flickering with faint energy pulses detectable even from orbit.
Orion hovered over the display, scanning the data. "If the readings are right, there's something alive down there. This could be our first chance to find someone who knows about the Devourer."
Riko raised an eyebrow, her arms crossed. "If they've managed to survive this long, they might have useful intel. But if they view us as a threat—"
Orion nodded. "They might, but we can't afford to overlook any leads. If they hold any knowledge about the Devourers or these relics, it's worth the risk. We need every advantage we can get."
Mara's fingers danced over the controls, her brow furrowed in concentration. "I'm picking up faint energy readings—definitely not natural. Whatever civilization thrived here, they left something behind that's still running."
Orion exhaled, the weight of the decision settling in. "Alright. Dray, Mara, you're with me. Riko, stay aboard and monitor the situation. If things go south, we need you ready to pull us out."
The shuttle cut through Ilvora's turbulent atmosphere, the hull rattling as they descended. They touched down near an expanse of ancient ruins, shrouded in alien vegetation. The structures, made of smooth, pale stone, were etched with symbols that pulsed faintly, as if alive with energy.
Orion's breath caught in his throat as he took in the scale of the place. Towering columns lined the pathways, and at the center, a grand archway loomed, glowing symbols shifting and changing as if in response to their approach.
Mara's voice trembled with awe. "This place… it feels like a living history. Almost like they left something behind for those who would come after."
Orion nodded, his voice low. "Or to warn them."
The crew moved cautiously toward the archway, each footstep reverberating in the silence. As they approached, a faint hum vibrated in the air, emanating from deep within the planet. Mara's scanner beeped, picking up fragmented readings from beneath the ruins.
"There's something alive down there," she said, glancing at the display. "It's faint, but it's tied to this energy source."
Dray raised his weapon, scanning the shadows. "Alive as in 'friendly,' or 'unknown'?"
"Alive as in 'unknown,'" Mara corrected, her brow furrowing. "The readings are patchy, but they suggest multiple life signs. They could be indigenous species—or remnants of whoever built this place."
They pressed deeper into the ruins, following the pulsing energy that guided them forward. The symbols on the walls shifted with every step, almost as though they were being read. Hours passed before they reached the entrance of a massive chamber, its walls lined with glowing crystals.
At the center of the room stood a figure, humanoid yet distinctly alien. It was draped in flowing, iridescent robes, and its eyes glowed with a piercing, unnatural light. When they entered, it tilted its head in recognition, as though it had been waiting for them.
Orion tensed, fingers brushing the hilt of his weapon, but the figure raised a hand in a gesture of peace.
"Travelers," it spoke, its voice echoing directly in their minds. "You seek knowledge of the great Devourers, do you not?"
Orion's heart skipped a beat as he met Mara's gaze, then turned back to the figure. "We do. The Devourers have destroyed countless worlds, and they are a threat to ours as well."
The figure's eyes darkened with a glimmer of sorrow. "The Devourers are older than the stars themselves. They are beings of hunger, consuming worlds to sustain their essence. Many civilizations have tried to resist them… but few have succeeded."
Mara stepped forward, her voice cautious but firm. "Do you know how to stop them? Or at least how to defend ourselves?"
The figure extended its hand, and a small crystal materialized, floating toward them. "This relic contains fragments of knowledge, gathered over eons. It speaks of the Devourers' weaknesses, but it is only a piece. To fully understand, you must gather the remaining relics scattered across the stars. Only then will you have the means to confront the hunger that plagues the cosmos."
Dray's eyes widened as he reached out to grasp the crystal with reverence. "How many of these relics are there?"
"Too many for a single journey," the figure replied, its gaze distant, almost sorrowful. "Each one lies guarded, hidden by ancient worlds and formidable defenses. Some lie buried in forgotten corners of the galaxy, while others are fiercely protected by those who once fought the Devourers and failed."
Orion took a deep breath, the enormity of their mission settling in. "Then we'll find them. We'll gather every relic, no matter how far we have to travel."
The figure's eyes softened, its expression almost human in its empathy. "Beware, Seekers. The path before you is fraught with danger—not only from the Devourers but from those who guard these relics as sacred. Not all will welcome your search."
Orion nodded, the weight of the warning sinking in. "We understand."
The figure's form began to shimmer, dissolving into the energy that filled the room. The light dimmed as the symbols on the walls faded, leaving only the soft hum of the crystals behind.
Mara clenched the relic in her hand, her voice filled with awe. "This… this isn't just knowledge. It's power. We're one step closer."
Orion stood tall, his resolve hardening. "This is only the beginning."
They retraced their steps through the ruins, a newfound sense of purpose propelling them forward. As they reached the surface, a low rumble vibrated through the air, and the ground trembled beneath their feet. Orion turned back, his gaze catching a fleeting glimpse of the ruins sinking into the earth as if the planet itself was reclaiming the knowledge it had shared.
Back aboard the Ark, the crew gathered around Mara as she studied the relic. Its faint glow pulsed with the same energy they had felt deep within the ruins.
Dray broke the silence. "What now?"
Orion's gaze never wavered from the relic in Mara's hand. "We follow the map. Gather every piece. And when the time is right, we strike at the heart of the Devourer."
The Ark's engines roared to life, and with that, they set their course for the next set of coordinates on the map. The journey ahead would only grow more perilous, but with this relic in hand, they had a weapon, a fragile hope, to guide them in their battle against the darkness.
