Chapter 190: Attempted Possession
Inside the stone chamber, as Lin Langtian stood up, waves of intense spiritual energy surged from his spirit palace, making the very air around him tremble. His mental power had undergone an astounding transformation—akin to the vast gap between the Creation and Nirvana realms.
With a deep breath, he opened his eyes, his gaze so potent it seemed almost tangible, slashing through the chamber's stone floor, leaving a visible crack. Feeling his strengthened mental energy, Lin Langtian couldn't help but smile faintly; reaching Symbol Master status was indeed a monumental step, comparable to reaching Nirvana.
He gave a slight shake of his head, then extended his hand to reveal the Ancient Key—glowing softly in his palm. His eyes narrowed as he observed it, suspecting something about its nature, but he gripped it firmly nonetheless.
The moment his fingers made contact with the key, it released a sudden tremor, and a column of light burst forth, enveloping him entirely. In the next moment, Lin Langtian's figure mysteriously vanished from the chamber.
In an instant, his surroundings went dark. The blackness was brief, though, quickly giving way to a dim, murky light. When his vision cleared, Lin Langtian found himself standing in a vast square made of ancient black stone, exuding a weighty and profound atmosphere.
But Lin Langtian wasn't interested in his surroundings. His gaze immediately fixed on a figure seated in the center of the square. It was a lifeless body—skeletal and still.
"Another Ancient Key…" he murmured, noticing a weathered, yellowish key in the hands of the skeleton. This key was about the size of two palms, with an unusual texture that was neither wood nor stone, and etched with strange symbols. It radiated the same ancient energy as his own key.
Lin Langtian hesitated for a moment but eventually reached out toward the key. Just as his hand stretched forward, a sharp gust of wind burst from the skeleton. It exploded suddenly, releasing an eerie gray light that shot straight into Lin Langtian's mind.
"This skeleton is really trying to possess me!" Lin Langtian cursed internally, realizing that his suspicions had been right. He remembered that in another timeline, Lin Dong had barely escaped this sinister trap, saved only by sheer luck.
Lin Langtian's body froze as chaos erupted in his spirit palace. The gray light transformed into a whirlwind of fierce energy, relentlessly tearing at his mental defenses, attempting to shred his spirit.
Although taken off guard, Lin Langtian wasn't actually panicking. He had long known about the sinister spirit within this skeleton. After all, it had failed to possess Lin Dong, so Lin Langtian was confident he could withstand its onslaught as well.
Maintaining his calm, Lin Langtian focused his spiritual power inward, sheltering within the protective aura of his Devouring Ancestral Symbol, which allowed him to fortify his spirit and defend against the violent gray storm.
"Relinquish your body to me, and I'll grant you boundless power!" a faint, cold voice whispered from within the storm. Its chilling tone echoed through the gray energy, making its malicious intentions clear.
"I see you possess the Devouring Ancestral Symbol—an extraordinary relic! But you lack the strength to wield it to its fullest potential. With me in control, we could achieve untold greatness!" The voice within the storm spoke with a hint of excitement, the whirlwind expanding as it surged toward the Devouring Symbol in a renewed effort to seize Lin Langtian's spirit.
Lin Langtian's face darkened. Although the enemy's power wasn't overwhelming, his spiritual techniques were exceedingly advanced, preventing Lin Langtian from launching an effective counterattack. Even with the Devouring Ancestral Symbol, Lin Langtian found himself locked in a defensive stalemate.
Inwardly, though, Lin Langtian began to shift his tactics. Channeling the Devouring Ancestral Symbol, he unleashed a wave of energy that tore into the storm, forcibly siphoning its power into himself.
"Ugh!" The spirit within the storm let out a frustrated grunt, taken aback by the ferocity of the Devouring Ancestral Symbol. It retaliated, twisting and thrashing within the whirlpool of power, warding off Lin Langtian's attempts to drain it entirely. They remained locked in a deadlock.
"Fool! By clinging to this body, you're wasting an opportunity! If you continue to resist, I'll annihilate your spirit entirely!" The voice roared angrily, frustration evident in its tone.
"Annihilate my spirit?" Lin Langtian scoffed. "You're already dead, yet you dare to act so boldly? Did you really think I came here unprepared?"
The moment his voice faded, a powerful presence surged within his spirit palace, and a dignified voice rang out, accompanied by a brilliant wave of Nine Nether Fire that struck the storm, forcing it backward with staggering force.
"Elder Ling!" Lin Langtian smiled as the Nine Nether Sparrow revealed herself within his spirit palace, her immense energy surrounding him in an impenetrable barrier.
He had been counting on her intervention all along, knowing her strength would be more than sufficient to handle this cunning intruder. Even if Elder Ling hadn't acted, he knew his Golden Spirit Mirror would have intervened if necessary.
In the depths of his spirit palace, the Nine Nether Fire gathered, forming a majestic Nine Nether Sparrow that emerged from the chaos, its expansive wings casting a shadow over the intruder. Its presence exuded an overwhelming sense of power.
"Who are you?! Why are you hiding within this boy's body?" The spirit's voice quivered, overtaken by a deep sense of dread.
