After a while, Jack pulled out an irregular piece of wood the size of an egg from the pile of wood. At first glance, the surface of this piece of wood was covered with bumps, just like a piece of inferior product that could be thrown away at will. This is called shadow wood, which is taken from the galls that grow on the trunk or roots of trees after they become sick. The number is relatively scarce.
Of course, this kind of shadow wood is rarely used in sculptures. It depends on what the sculpture is and whether the work itself conforms to the wood growth structure of the shadow wood. A good sculpture should at least balance the texture, grain, color, branch structure, toughness and wax compatibility of the finished product and the original wood.
In a strict sense, shadow wood does not belong to any kind of wood. There is no distinction between northern wood and southern wood. It is just a special wood that grows from a disease. However, its shape is very consistent with Jack's original conception of the bloodshot eyeball.
Jack bought this piece of wood on a whim. He didn't expect to use it in the future. If he just wanted to collect it, he felt that this shadow wood was also very good. The surface of the shadow wood was bumpy, with irregular and uneven wood bumps everywhere, but in Jack's opinion, the natural growth trend of this thing was very similar to the back part of the eyeball, that is, the messy eye nerves.
The smooth part of the front of the shadow wood was cut more carefully, and the nerve part at the back was refined, and it was a complete eyeball shape. After he had a rough idea in his mind, he began to carve.
First, he peeled the wood, and then used a pen to draw the approximate shape of an eye on the main part of the shadow wood where the eyeball needed to be carved. He could have drawn it on paper first, but it had been a while since he was reborn into this body, and he was able to control the basic rhythm of carving. For making such a small sculpture, there was no need to make a draft in advance.
Moreover, this eye was very impressive to Jack. It had completely entered his mind and could not be forgotten. After tracing the basic shape on the shadow wood, he fixed the shadow wood with a vise on the workbench and used a wire saw to remove the excess part of the shadow wood, making it close to the size of an eyeball.
Because some excess parts need to be reserved for the subsequent trimming operation, it is impossible to keep the remaining shadow wood just the size of the eyeball, otherwise it will be impossible to do the subsequent trimming. Then he began to fine-tune the shadow wood with spiral fine teeth.
In this process, Jack showed a stronger concentration than in previous carvings, forgetting time, hunger, and sleepiness. He was in a state of obsession, and his mind was full of images of the congested eyeball.
In the past, it would take at least 24 hours to make the finished eyeball with Jack's skills and speed, but from morning to dusk, he had completed the entire eyeball. After trimming the surface and large surfaces around the eyeball with a circular knife and a flat-blade knife, he switched to an electric tooth machine for detailed fine-tuning.
Soon, the last sunset disappeared and the lights came on. Jack took a deep breath, suddenly stopped, slowly put down the tools in his hand, and stared at the almost formed eyeball without blinking.
At this moment, he felt like he was finally alive and felt the world around him again. The night wind blew in from the windowsill, and the dim street lights shone in the corner of the window, pulling out a long triangular reflection.
So far, the real object of the congested eyeball in his mind has been basically presented by him, but the most real thing is the surface and surroundings of the eyeball facing him. The optic nerve behind the eyeball has not been seen, so Jack has not cut it yet.
He took the eyeball sculpture off the vise, took it in his hand and looked at it carefully. Suddenly, he felt a strong sense of weakness. Jack suddenly felt extremely thirsty. He immediately got up, walked to the water dispenser in the living room with a floating step, took a large glass of water, drank it in a gulp, and soon felt full, and then a strong sense of sleepiness came over him.
He was awakened after 4 a.m., fought with Fiona's body, ran downstairs in fear to dig out his eyeballs, and then talked to the police officer who came for so long, afraid of exposing his secret, and his spirit was in a highly tense state. Now he has been carving at the workbench for such a long time without any distractions. Almost ten hours of full concentration made Jack feel tired like never before, and he couldn't even lift his eyelids.
Put down the water cup, return to the bedroom, lie on the bed, and fall asleep as soon as his head touches the pillow. The light on the workbench is still on, and the window is open, but as Jack told Xiong Wei and other police officers, this old residential building is very quiet, exuding a strange silence.
Time passed. This sleep lasted until 5 p.m. the next day. Jack was awakened by hunger. Before he opened his eyes, he heard his stomach growling. In a daze, he opened his eyes and saw a stranger's face. It was a woman standing beside his bed, bending down and looking at him.
This scene startled Jack and he sat up from the bed. "Don't be nervous, I'm an investigator from the Public Security Bureau." The woman took a step back, smiled, and spread her hands. "I saw you were sleeping soundly, so I didn't wake you up." She was tall, beautiful, with clear eyes and short hair. She didn't wear a police uniform, but a tight white short-sleeved shirt, a pair of waist jeans, and a small bright black backpack.
While talking, the woman took out her ID and put it in front of Jack so that he could take a closer look. Jack took a look. The ID read "Lily, Investigator of the Special Case Investigation Team of the Yungu City Public Security Bureau". There was a black six-pointed star in the middle of the bottom of the ID. Jack remembered this symbol from the police officer Xiong Wei he had just met. There didn't seem to be a similar symbol on their ID.
"Lily?" he muttered. This name, domineering, has an inexplicable... milky taste! "How did you get in?" Jack regained his concentration and asked. Lily shrugged: "I came in through the door. The investigation team has many ways to open this kind of rubbish lock, and has the power to enter the private domain without the owner's consent."
After saying that, Lily turned and walked towards the living room, "Get up, let's go to the living room to discuss the details of yesterday's case." As she turned around, her eyes passed over the unfinished sculpture eyeball that Jack was still holding in his hand, and she condensed slightly, but did not ask more questions.
