Her reflection in the cracked mirror stared back at her, a young woman with determined eyes, dark hair pulled back into a neat ponytail. Her stomach tightened as she navigated the metro, each stop bringing her closer to her new job at Cheng & Partners. The office tower loomed above her, its glass exterior reflecting the city in fractured, dazzling patterns. She felt small as she entered, slipping past a revolving door into a lobby of polished marble and silver accents.

The receptionist gave her a once-over before handing her a visitor's badge. "Third floor," the woman said, barely glancing up.

Wen's heart pounded as she made her way through the open-concept office, where coworkers moved with brisk efficiency, speaking in hushed voices over sleek desks and glancing occasionally at the large floor-to-ceiling windows. The whole office seemed bathed in cold light, as if ambition itself had a sharp, metallic sheen.

She reached her desk, trying not to feel out of place among her more polished colleagues. Just as she was about to take her seat, a figure approached—a woman in her early forties, with a commanding presence and a piercing gaze. She extended a manicured hand, her grip firm.

"Liu Wen. I'm Mei Ling, your supervisor. Welcome to Cheng & Partners."

"Thank you, Ms. Mei. I'm honored to be here," Wen said, hoping her nerves didn't show.

"Good. We expect a lot from our team members, Liu. I trust you're ready for the challenge."

Wen nodded, swallowing the urge to promise more than she could deliver. Mei Ling's gaze lingered on her, as though gauging whether Wen was truly up for the task. Then, without another word, Mei Ling turned on her heel and strode away, leaving Wen standing amid her new reality.
