Chapter 8: Late-Night Study Sessions

Wen's small apartment was dimly lit, her makeshift study corner cluttered with textbooks, highlighters, and stray sticky notes. She'd started studying for her business degree after work, determined to build a future not defined solely by her current job. Each late night was a small step toward something more substantial, something hers.

She glanced at the clock, her eyes blurring from exhaustion. The quiet of the night was comforting, and yet her mind kept drifting back to Mei Ling's words, to the sense that she was constantly walking a tightrope, with every mistake threatening to plunge her back into obscurity.

Her phone vibrated, breaking the silence. A message from Li Yan, her friend from work:

"Hanging in there?"

Wen smiled and typed back:

"Barely. But I can't let myself fail. I came here to make something of myself, not go home empty-handed."

"Don't be too hard on yourself. You're doing amazing," Li Yan replied, adding a heart emoji. "Let's grab lunch tomorrow. My treat. You need a break."

Wen's heart warmed at her friend's kindness. It was small moments like these, shared with someone who understood the weight of the city, that gave her strength. She allowed herself a brief smile, the exhaustion lifting ever so slightly.

"Just one more chapter," she whispered to herself, diving back into her notes.
