Monday morning arrived with a renewed sense of purpose for Wen. Her conversation with Kai had given her the strength to tackle the final phase of her project, determined to prove herself once and for all. But as soon as she arrived at the office, she sensed something was off. Colleagues glanced at her, their conversations hushed and curious, as if something had shifted in the air.
As she settled into her cubicle, Eric approached, his expression unreadable.
"Good morning, Wen," he said, his tone too smooth. "Heard you had an interesting weekend."
Wen frowned, unsure of what he meant. "Just spent it preparing for the project's final phase. Why?"
He shrugged, a smirk tugging at his lips. "Oh, no reason. Just that a friend of mine happened to be at the same café you were at. With… a rather intriguing guest."
Her heart sank as she realized what he was implying. Somehow, he had learned about her meeting with Kai. She kept her expression neutral, determined not to let him see her discomfort.
"Meeting a friend in a public space isn't against any company policy, Eric," she replied, her voice steady.
Eric leaned in, lowering his voice. "Oh, I know. But it's… interesting, don't you think? The girl from a small town, cozying up to a Chen. I'm just surprised, is all."
The implication stung, and she felt a pang of anger rise within her. But she maintained her composure, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
"I earned my place here, Eric," she said, her voice firm. "Whatever I do outside the office doesn't concern you."
Eric's smile faded, his expression turning cold. "Just be careful, Wen. You never know who's watching."
As he walked away, Wen clenched her fists, anger simmering beneath the surface. She knew Eric was trying to undermine her, to make her doubt herself. But she wouldn't let him. She had worked too hard, and she wasn't about to let his petty jealousy or manipulations ruin her progress.
Still, as the day wore on, she couldn't shake the feeling of unease. Eric's insinuations lingered in her mind, a reminder of the delicate line she walked between her personal and professional lives.
