Chapter 25: Family Ties

Meanwhile, across town, Kai was dealing with his own pressures. His father had called him to the family estate for a meeting, the kind that usually entailed lengthy discussions about the Chen family's legacy and Kai's role within it. He had a feeling it was about more than just business this time.

As he entered the study, his father's gaze sharpened, a glint of disapproval in his eyes. "Kai, I've been hearing… interesting things about your recent activities."

Kai's stomach dropped, but he forced himself to remain calm. "Is that so?"

His father's voice was clipped, his gaze unwavering. "You've been seen with a girl—a Liu Wen. I understand she isn't from our social circle."

Kai's jaw tightened, a surge of protectiveness flaring within him. "Wen is… someone important to me. And I don't see why her background should matter."

His father's expression darkened, a mixture of disbelief and frustration flickering across his face. "Kai, do you understand what's at stake here? The Chen family's reputation, its influence—these things cannot be compromised by… impulsive choices."

"It's not impulsive," Kai replied, his voice steady. "Wen is grounded, hardworking, someone who values me for who I am, not what I represent."

His father shook his head, a trace of disappointment in his gaze. "I've tried to teach you the importance of maintaining our legacy. If you choose to disregard that, you'll face the consequences. This family does not tolerate actions that put its reputation at risk."

Kai's hands clenched, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "So I'm supposed to live my life as an extension of the Chen family? Without considering what I want or who I care about?"

His father's gaze remained unyielding. "You're expected to make choices that reflect our values. And if that means putting aside personal interests, then so be it."

The finality in his father's tone left Kai feeling cold, as if a chasm had opened between them. He had always known that his family valued legacy above all else, but hearing it spelled out so clearly felt like a blow.

After leaving the study, Kai walked out onto the estate grounds, his mind a whirlwind of anger and uncertainty. The reality of his situation weighed on him—the pressure to conform, to choose between his family's expectations and his feelings for Wen.

He pulled out his phone, typing a message to Wen but hesitating before sending it. What could he tell her? That his family didn't approve? That they would never see her as anything more than a "distraction"? The thought sickened him, but he knew he couldn't ignore the reality they faced.

As he stared at the message screen, he felt a flicker of doubt. Was he prepared to fight for his own life, to stand up to his family's demands in order to be with Wen?

At that moment, he realized he had a choice to make—a choice that would define not only his relationship with Wen but his entire future. And for the first time, he felt the true weight of what that choice would cost.
