For Kai, the days felt strangely empty without Wen by his side. He threw himself into his start-up, working late into the night to distract himself from the ache that lingered like a bruise. The tension with his father had only grown, and he knew that his choice to step away from the family business was seen as a betrayal.
One evening, after a long day of meetings and setbacks, Kai sat in his empty office, his thoughts drifting back to Wen. He missed her laughter, her quiet strength, the way she could calm him with just a look. But he also knew that pushing her to choose between him and her dreams would be unfair.
His phone buzzed, and he glanced down, surprised to see a message from Zhang Wei:
"Drinks tonight? Could use a break from the usual nonsense."
Kai agreed, grateful for the distraction. When he arrived at the bar, Zhang Wei greeted him with a knowing smirk.
"Missing someone?" Zhang Wei asked, his tone light but his gaze probing.
Kai gave a small shrug, trying to keep his expression neutral. "We're… taking a break. She has a lot going on, and I don't want to be the reason she holds back."
Zhang Wei studied him, his gaze thoughtful. "You know, Kai, I always thought you were one of the only people in our world who actually cared about finding something real. But maybe you're letting go a little too easily."
Kai's stomach tightened, but he forced himself to stay calm. "It's not about letting go. It's about giving her the space to succeed. She's been working for this her entire life."
Zhang Wei nodded, a hint of respect in his gaze. "Fair enough. Just don't lose yourself in all this, Kai. You can't spend your life running from your family's expectations and expect to find happiness."
As they continued their conversation, Kai felt a new resolve building within him. Maybe he had been running, avoiding the responsibilities he'd inherited. But he was determined to create a life on his own terms. And if that meant taking on his family's legacy in a way that allowed him to be true to himself, he was ready.
