Chapter 50: A Glimpse of the Past

One afternoon, Wen was finishing up a meeting when she noticed a missed call from an unfamiliar number. Curious, she returned the call, only to be greeted by a voice she hadn't expected—her mother's.

"Wen," her mother's voice was warm, filled with a mixture of surprise and longing. "It's been too long. I miss you."

Wen felt a surge of emotions, the sound of her mother's voice bringing back memories of her small hometown, the quiet life she had left behind. She had rarely spoken with her family since moving to Shanghai, her focus entirely on her work and her relationship with Kai.

"I miss you too, Mom," Wen replied, her voice soft.

Her mother hesitated before continuing. "Are you happy, Wen? I know how hard you've worked, how much you've sacrificed. But I just want to know… if it's worth it."

The question lingered, its simplicity making Wen realize how much had changed since she'd left home. She thought of the struggles she'd faced, the loneliness, the pressure—but also the joy, the growth, and, most importantly, her love for Kai.

"Yes, Mom," she said, her voice filled with quiet conviction. "It's worth it. I've found my place here. And I've met someone who makes it feel even more meaningful."

They talked for a while, catching up on family news and sharing memories. When Wen hung up, she felt a sense of closure, a connection to her roots that she hadn't felt in years. She knew she didn't have to choose between her past and her future—they were both a part of her story.
