Chapter 223: Investigating the Mole

Avengers Tower.

As Captain America stepped into the hall, Tony Stark casually instructed, "Friday, activate anti-eavesdropping measures."

"Understood."

A mechanical voice echoed as countless sensors surrounding Avengers Tower sprang to life. Stark Industries' cutting-edge technology ensured that even the most advanced listening devices of the U.S. government could not penetrate their defenses. This level of caution was necessary because the group was about to discuss the case of Nick Fury's murder.

Tony took the lead, projecting a holographic display as several blue screens appeared before everyone.

"I've recreated the case using AI forensics. Let's take another careful look."

He pressed the play button, and the holographic projection began to replay the events of that fateful day in a three-dimensional simulation, allowing for a full 360-degree view from any angle.

The team watched with bated breath, their eyes glued to the screen, afraid to miss any critical detail.

When the simulation concluded, Captain America's expression darkened with sorrow. Nick Fury had been the one to bring them together as a team, the founder of the Avengers Initiative. And now, he was gone.

Sensing the heavy atmosphere, Tony waved a hand, dismissing the projection, and brought up a new document on the screen.

"After Fury's death, we gained access to classified S.H.I.E.L.D. files—specifically, two initiatives: Project Paperclip and Project Insight."

At the mention of these names, Captain America immediately stood up and stared at the projection.

The first document detailed Project Paperclip.

The timeline began with Captain America's destruction of HYDRA's bases. Following that, S.H.I.E.L.D. had taken over the cleanup operations. However, instead of imprisoning HYDRA's loyal scientists, S.H.I.E.L.D. had quietly recruited them, confining them under a guise of "soft detention" and integrating them into their ranks.

The files revealed that these scientists continued their research unabated, as if they had simply relocated to a new workplace.

Captain America's gaze became distant. As he read through the project's details, the bitter realization dawned upon him—he had been deceived. The sacrifices of countless soldiers who fought to destroy HYDRA had been in vain; their enemy had been absorbed rather than eradicated.

Sharing his disillusionment, Black Widow approached him, her expression filled with disbelief.

"I can't believe S.H.I.E.L.D. had such a twisted plan."

Tony spoke up, "I suspect Nick Fury was killed because he uncovered this plan. That means HYDRA operatives are still embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D., and their positions must be high-ranking."

His theory cast a somber silence over the room. The group could feel the shadow of a deep conspiracy surrounding them. HYDRA, like weeds, seemed impossible to eradicate completely.

Captain America exhaled deeply, determination etched across his face.

At that moment, Hawkeye interjected, "If Fury was targeted solely because of Project Paperclip's exposure, I doubt it would have been discovered so easily. For him to be compromised, the HYDRA mole must have known him extremely well."

Black Widow nodded in agreement. "Exactly. Fury wouldn't leave evidence behind to raise suspicion. He must have been betrayed."

Hearing this, Bruce Banner rubbed his hands together and magnified the documents for Project Insight, projecting them for everyone to see.

"Take a look at Project Insight next."

The team turned their attention to the new projection, where a bold title appeared: Project Insight
