Chapter 49 - A Name Among Enemies

Taryn and Lucien moved quickly, the echoes of the fight still lingering in the back of her mind. Every step seemed louder in the silence that followed, the hum of the wards pressing faintly against her skin like a reminder of the stronghold's magic pulsing around them.

The air grew heavier as they descended deeper into the maze-like corridors. Taryn felt the weight of it settle in her chest, but she pushed forward, her grip tightening on her dagger.

Lucien walked just behind her, his steps soundless as ever. She didn't need to look back to know his gaze was scanning every shadow, every corner.

"This way," she whispered, turning sharply down a narrower corridor. The walls here seemed closer, the air thicker.

"You sure?" Lucien murmured, his voice low but laced with skepticism.

"Yes," she snapped, sharper than she intended. She caught the faint smirk on his face out of the corner of her eye but ignored it.
