Chapter 59 - Caught Between Tides

The sun rose sluggishly over the horizon, casting a pale gold light across the rippling waves. The ship creaked and groaned as it cut through the water, the rhythmic sound of repairs filling the air. Taryn leaned against the railing near the bow, watching as the crew patched up the damage from the night before. Frayed ropes were replaced, splintered planks hammered back into place, and buckets of seawater scrubbed blood from the deck.

She turned her gaze to the horizon, the endless expanse of sea offering little comfort. The battle with the pirates was over, but the tension in her chest hadn't eased. Survival was only the first step. She tightened her grip on the railing, her knuckles whitening as she thought of the captain's sharp, assessing gaze during the fight. He hadn't said anything outright, but his eyes had spoken volumes: he was watching her, questioning her, and likely waiting for her to slip.
