Chapter 97 - Circling the Fire

The fire crackled softly, its flames casting flickering light across the clearing. Shadows stretched long and uneven over the trio seated around it, the night around them still and heavy. Above, the stars pierced through the darkness of the forest canopy in striking contrast to the tension that lay between them.

Taryn sat nearest the fire, stirring the embers with a stick. Her movements were slow and almost languid, yet her mind wandered. She could feel Lucien's hunger, pointed and unyielding, though she kept her eyes toward the flames.

Opposite her, Kah'el sat with his back to a fallen log, a whetstone gliding along the edge of his blade. The rhythmic scrape of stone against metal filled the silence, steady but somehow tense. His gaze stayed fixed on his work, though his presence was like a taut string ready to snap.
