A Friend

*****************************

'Where am I?' The question echoed in Selene's mind as she traversed a dark, empty void, devoid of light. She had no sense of how long she'd been walking when a flash of blinding white pierced the darkness.

"Is this heaven?" she murmured, gazing around at the featureless white expanse. Then, a voice from her left side drew her attention.

A bed materialized, with someone lying upon it. Approaching cautiously, Selene gasped.

It was Viktor, weak and pathetic. Selene looked at him with complex emotions whirling through her eyes, her hatred for the man who had slaughtered her family, yet a lingering echo of the paternal affection he'd once shown.

'But why is he still alive?' she wondered. Although Viktor was weak and sick, unlike a vampire, she remembered the ninja kid cutting off Viktor's head. She knew even the elders couldn't possibly survive that.

She started towards Viktor, seeking answers, but stopped. A dust-like ash rose from the white ground, coalescing into the form of a man kneeling beside Viktor. As the ash fully formed, Selene's eyes widened in confusion as she saw it was Marcus, whispering something to Viktor's ears.

Strangely, Selene heard the whisper as if it were directed at her. Marcus was offering Viktor immortality in exchange for his military expertise and army to fight his brother's spawn, the werewolves.

"This is Viktor's memory," Selene whispered, a dawning realization illuminating her mind. 'I'm not dead. That kid must have fed me Viktor's blood.' The enormity of her wound, even for a vampire, meant certain death without drinking blood to regenerate. Seeing Viktor's memories was only possible if she'd consumed his blood.

Viktor and Marcus began to crumble, dissolving before her eyes. Turning to her right, she witnessed another memory: Viktor leading Marcus and Amelia to a village, where they encountered the villagers becoming rabid werewolves as they killed them all while capturing Marcus's brother.

The scene disintegrated, replaced by another. This time, she saw Viktor enslaving Lycans, then Lucian's birth the first generation Lycan, and then the horrifying act of burning her daughter in the sunlight, driven by fear of her hybrid child.

Selene was torn, Sonja's resemblance to her was striking. She reached out to the charred remains, but the vision dissolved once more, replaced by the brutal murder of her family at Viktor's hands.

Finally, she saw her former self, making Selene step back as she felt something snap in the back of her head. Forgotten memories flooded back to her, from her family, the day Viktor had killed them, and finally, the reason why Viktor had killed her family: William's Cage.

Then, before Selene could react, the blackness swallowed her whole. But this time, she wasn't walking as before. She felt her wrists and feet being restrained while she lay there. She knew she was conscious. 'Looks like they covered my eyes,' Selene thought, as she felt something tied to her head.

Just when Selene was about to move and try to break free from the restraints, she heard a pair of footsteps approaching her direction while a man and woman argued.

Selene stopped moving, pretending to be unconscious while listening, collecting information.

Hideout02: Laboratory

"Now tell me why you hired the mercenaries? You changed the plans," Lucian asked Kim Yoo-ri while he looked at Selene, who was pretending to sleep, making him shake his head in amusement as he walked towards the table where Marcus's severed arm lay.

"One way or another, people are gonna find out that someone is targeting vampires and Lycans. I hired them so they can make it look like an organization is hunting them down, not just you because of experiments," Kim Yoo-ri said as she took a syringe from the side, handing it to him.

"And what makes you think your idea is gonna work?" Lucian asked, looking at Kim Yoo-ri's eyes before taking the syringe and turning around, focusing on Marcus's arm and taking blood from it.

"No, I don't know if it's gonna work, but there will be more chances to cover our tracks," Kim Yoo-ri sighed, lowering her head.

"You don't know…" Lucian whispered, releasing Marcus's arm, and turning towards Kim Yoo-ri, who had lowered her head. Lucian put down the syringe. "But one thing you should have known is that every decision in the clan will go through me," he said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

"I only wanted to help," Kim Yoo-ri whispered. She knew Lucian didn't fully trust her; that's why she constantly sought ways to demonstrate her commitment to his goals.

Lucian approached Kim Yoo-ri, standing before her. He sighed, gently lifting her chin with a finger before flicking her forehead.

"Ahhh," Kim Yoo-ri held her forehead, looking at Lucian with doubt.

Lucian walked past her, going to Selene. "I know you're trying to help, that's why I'm gonna offer you a decision. Stay with me or just stay back with my mother," Lucian said, turning his head. "Think about it," he added, as he walked to Selene's side, taking off her blindfold.

Kim Yoo-ri lowered her head, caressing her forehead. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them, determination blazing as she looked at Lucian's back.

"I'll stay with you, but I need to go back there one last time," Kim Yoo-ri said, walking to his side and raising an eyebrow at Selene, whose eyes remained closed.

"Have you thought about it? Maybe my mother won't let you go if you go back there," Lucian said to Kim Yoo-ri while he rolled his eyes at Selene, who was pretending to be asleep. With that in mind, he playfully pinched her nose, clamping it between his fingers.

"Then you're coming with me to ensure I can leave," Kim Yoo-ri said, a smile playing on her lips. She turned and walked toward the laboratory exit.

"Ha! Look at you, ordering your Tōryō," Lucian chuckled, shaking his head.

Kim Yoo-ri stopped walking, hearing his words. "I'm not serving your clan, Lucian. I'm joining your future pack," she said, resuming her walk. As she neared the door, she added, "And don't you want to see them again?" Then she left.

Lucian stared at the plastic flap door, still swaying. He couldn't help but think about the children of the Ozunu clan from Violet to Garrett and Julianne and finally Anya when he was interrupted.

"Can you let go?" Selene said, her voice muffled, as she looked at Lucian.

Lucian turned his head to Selene, smiling innocently. "Oh, you're awake," he said, letting go of her nose. He took one of the chairs in the lab, placing it beside Selene and sitting down.

When Lucian sat on the chair, Selene continued talking, with doubt in her voice.

"Why did you save me when you're killing the vampires?" she whispered, confused. She thought about how much Lucian had spared her when he could have killed her many times during the attack.

"Oh, that's because you're too pretty when I hold you in my arms when you're unconscious. I couldn't help but think about making you mine," Lucian said, nodding his head, crossing his arms while grinning.

Selene's eyes widened, hearing his reason. 'What the hell is this kid talking about?' she thought, shocked and bewildered.

"Are you serious right now?" she asked with confusion, turning her head to Lucian, knowing he was supposed to be a kid.

"Of course not. I need someone to lead me to William's Cage, and you're the right person to do that, isn't? After all, you're the daughter of the person that built it," Lucian said, leaning forward to Selene, while smirking.

Selene looked at Lucian's face. She couldn't help but observe him more before sighing, turning her head, looking at the ceiling. 'What am I expecting from a kid?' she thought.

"How do you even know that?" She asked with confusion, keeping thinking to herself, 'Isn't he a bit too handsome?' She closed her eyes to remove her distracting thoughts.

"Well, let's say I got my way to know information, but sometimes it's not correct, that's why I need you to lead," Lucian said with a charming smile, adding in his mind, 'Who knows what shit is in that cage in this world?' Lucian didn't want to take any risk if something changed, like how the vampires got an escape route beneath the Ördögház, unlike the movie.

"What makes you think I will lead you? Some of the vampires you killed are my friends," Selene asked, turning her head, looking at Lucian in the eyes.

"I can be your friend," Lucian said, smiling, looking at Selene. They stayed silent for seconds before Lucian continued. "And I'm not making you lead without offering anything. I can make you walk under the sun again."

Selene turned her head, closing her eyes. "What a friend. If I don't lead the way, you're already threatening to burn me with daylight," she whispered.

"Hahaha," Lucian chuckled softly at her complaint, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I'm not threatening to burn you. I'm offering you immunity against sunlight, making you available outside during the day," he said, his voice steady, his confidence radiating through his words.

Selene's eyes snapped open, hearing Lucian's words. She stared at him, her disbelief palpable. "Impossible. No vampires can walk in sunlight," she said, her voice laced with a mixture of incredulity and amusement.

"It's the one thing we all know, it's a law of nature, it's...well, it's common knowledge," she added, her voice trailing off as she shook her head, trying to process what he had just said. Selene knew even vampire elders like Viktor would burn in daylight with just matter of minute or even seconds.

"Well, for your information, there are other vampires that glowed like a disco ball with sunlight," Lucian said as he chuckled at Selene's disbelief.

"I don't need to lie to you," Lucian whispered, standing up as he walked towards Selene, holding her chin to make her face him. He looked at her straight in the eyes.

"I always kept my promise," Lucian whispered, looking at Selene, while Selene looked at Lucian. Her heartbeat couldn't help but pound faster.

Lucian held her gaze, his eyes searching hers, waiting for a response. But Selene remained silent, her expression unreadable. A flicker of disappointment crossed Lucian's face, a subtle shift in his demeanor. He had offered her a chance at freedom, a chance to walk in the sunlight again, and she hadn't even acknowledged it.

Seeing Selene didn't speak, Lucian let go of her chin, shaking his head, walking towards the plastic flap door.

"Think about it," Lucian said, his voice tinged with a hint of frustration, while walking out.

Selene laid her head on the operating chair, looking at the ceiling with confusion. "What am I gonna do now?" she whispered to herself. She knew even if she escaped from here, she couldn't go back to the vampires with Marcus escaping. As her shooting at him, she was probably being called a traitor now. 'What if what he was saying is real?' Selene then remembered Lucian's face, making her hurriedly shake her head, closing her eyes, wanting to rest.

'A friend huh,' she thought with amusement, remembering Lucian's offer. 'And I'm joining your future pack, huh?' She chuckled at the absurdity of it, shaking her head again. 'How can a kid like him be so sure about these things? He's been around for so long…?' she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Lucian than met the eye.

She thought about what Lucian had said about the vampires who glowed under the sun. It was a crazy idea, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Lucian wasn't lying. How could he know so much about the hidden truths of the vampire world? And why would he go to such lengths to convince her to help him?

The possibilities swirled in her mind, and she was drawn to Lucian's offer. The idea of walking under the sun again was intoxicating, an impossible dream that suddenly seemed within reach. But she knew she had to be careful. Lucian was a wildcard, a dangerous force she didn't fully understand.

As she lay there, trying to make sense of the situation, she felt a strange sense of peace. It was as if she was finally letting go of the anger and pain of the past. Perhaps she had been so caught up in the struggle against Viktor that she had forgotten what it was like to dream.

And maybe, just maybe, this kid, this seemingly harmless boy, was her only chance for a new beginning.
