Enzo's POV
Her body pushed near to mine, and I could feel her breath against my chest. Her heart was pounding, much like mine in the quiet around us. While the outside world had stopped, everything inside of me cried out for our movement.
Her voice scratchy, she muttered, "You're making a mistake, Maxim." The words were like a knife to my chest, but the agony was little compared to the anxiety I could see in her eyes. "This road you are on will ruin us both."
I briefly closed my eyes, but the weight of the moment pressed harder than it had ever done. She made sense. Every feeling in me sought to shield her from the craziness rushing out of control. But when every darkness seemed to be a secret I didn't yet know, how could I keep her safe?
