The night in Xian Town was quiet, save for the occasional rustling of the wind through the narrow alleyways. The streets were mostly empty as law-abiding citizens had long since retired to their homes. However, this peace was shattered when a patrol guard hurried toward the town's administrative office, his face pale and his breath labored.

"A crime has been committed," he reported hastily to the officer in charge. "In one of the dark streets near the marketplace. A man was found lifeless, and there were signs of a struggle."
