The Midnight Bell

The midnight bell's echo still hung in the air, each toll crawling across the walls like invisible claws. Maya's breath hitched as she looked at Aarav's half-possessed body, his chest heaving, the black veins pulsing like living snakes beneath his skin.

"I won't lose you," Maya whispered. "Not to him."

Suddenly, a whisper floated through the hallway:

"Find the bell… the bell knows the truth."

Maya froze.

"Who's there?!"

No answer—just the faint sound of metal against stone, clang… clang… clang.

She glanced back at Aarav, who was struggling on the floor, his hands clawing at his own chest as Ambrose's shadow tried to devour him completely.

"Don't… leave me…" he rasped, his real voice trembling under Ambrose's growl.

Maya tore a piece of cloth and tied it around Aarav's wrist.

"This will bring me back to you. Hold on, Aarav."

Following the faint sound of the bell, she discovered a hidden staircase behind a crumbling wall. Dust and cobwebs clung to her face as she descended into the manor's underground.

With each step, the air grew colder—unnaturally cold.

At the bottom, she entered a massive stone chamber, where a huge black bell hung from rusted chains. The bell was cracked, but a faint silver light seeped from the crack like moonlight bleeding out of the night.

Suddenly, an old figure appeared—the Ghost of Lady Blackthorn, draped in a torn wedding gown. Her pale face smiled faintly.

"You're the first to reach the bell since I died here," she said softly.

Maya gasped.

"What is this bell? Why does it hurt Ambrose?"

The ghost's eyes turned hollow.

"This bell was forged from the bones of the innocent he killed… including me. Every time it rings, his grip weakens. But it must be rung seven times at midnight to free Aarav completely. If you fail, he will take the boy's soul—forever."

Maya's blood ran cold.

"Seven times… and I only heard three…"

Lady Blackthorn's voice trembled:

"Then you must finish it before midnight ends. But beware—the moment you touch it, Ambrose will come for you."

Back upstairs, Aarav's body snapped upright, Ambrose now fully controlling him. His crimson-black eyes glowed like fire.

"She dares touch my bell?" Ambrose hissed. "Then I will break her."

With unnatural speed, Aarav's possessed body began hunting Maya through the underground passages.

Maya's hands gripped the frozen rope of the black bell. Her heartbeat raced.

"For Aarav… I'll do this."

She pulled. The bell roared, sending a wave of energy through the manor. The walls shook, and Ambrose let out a guttural scream inside Aarav's body.

But she had only rung it four times.

Three more… and the entire manor seemed to awaken.
