The moment Aarav's blood touched the black stone, a ripple of dark light spread through the chamber. The walls trembled, the floor cracked, and a low hum filled the air like a living heartbeat.
Maya clutched Aarav's arm.
"What's happening?"
Aarav's face twisted in pain.
"It's… pulling something from me!"
The black stone melted like liquid glass, flowing into strange shapes and runes around Aarav's hand. Suddenly, an ancient voice—different from the monster's—echoed through the room:
"Blood of the Blackthorn… you are the lock and the key. Give what is owed, and the beast shall sleep."
Maya's eyes widened.
"Aarav, it wants more blood. Maybe even… your life!"
"Then I'll give it. I can't let that thing escape, Maya!"
The chained monster outside let out a piercing roar, breaking free from some of the black chains. Its skeletal hand slammed through the wall, claws scraping inches from Aarav's face.
Maya screamed and picked up a sharp piece of bone, slashing at the hand. It recoiled with an ear-splitting shriek.
"Aarav! Hurry! It's breaking through!"
The runes on Aarav's hand started burning, drawing blood from his veins into the black stone. He collapsed to his knees, gasping.
"It's… taking too much. I can't…"
Maya grabbed his face, tears streaming.
"No! I won't let you die like this. There has to be another way!"
Her fingers brushed the stone—and to her shock, it reacted to her touch, glowing even brighter. A second voice whispered in her mind:
"Two hearts bound by trust… can share the weight."
Maya clasped Aarav's bloody hand with hers, letting the stone cut into her palm. Their blood mixed, and a wave of black energy exploded outward, slamming the beast back into its cocoon. The cocoon closed like a prison of bones, the creature screaming:
"This is not the end… you will come back… when the seventh mirror calls!"
The chamber fell silent. Aarav collapsed against the wall, pale but breathing. Maya held his hand tightly.
"Aarav… you scared me to death."
He smiled weakly.
"Guess we make a good team… even when we're bleeding to death."
But as Maya looked down, she saw a strange mark on their palms—a symbol shaped like an eye inside a circle, glowing faintly.
"What is this?" she whispered.
Aarav's expression darkened.
"I think… it means we're part of the curse now."
