Chapter Thirteen: The Ghost in the Signal

The city skyline glowed faintly in the pre-dawn light as Ashira sat on the edge of a rooftop, the fractured drive in her lap. The events of the past hours felt unreal, yet the ache in her muscles and the weight in her chest were sharp reminders of their truth. Cipher was nearby, leaning against the rooftop's ledge, watching the horizon with a pensive expression.

"What now?" Ashira asked, breaking the silence.

Cipher didn't respond immediately. Instead, he reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, sleek device. "This is a tracer. It can help us locate residual fragments of the Echo Network. But there's a catch."

"Of course there is," Ashira said, her voice tinged with exhaustion.

"This device is a beacon. Once activated, it will attract anything connected to the Echo Network. If there are active nodes left, they'll know we're hunting them."

Ashira stared at the tracer, weighing the risk. "If we don't do this, the Echo Network will regroup. We might have slowed it down, but we didn't destroy it. It's still out there, waiting."

Cipher nodded. "That's the reality of fighting something like this. It doesn't sleep. It doesn't stop. But we've got the upper hand now. The Network is disoriented, and we have the one thing it didn't predict."

"Us?"

"Exactly."

With a determined nod, Ashira stood. "Then let's finish what we started."

Cipher pressed a button on the tracer, and it emitted a soft, pulsating glow. The device connected to Ashira's laptop, pulling data from the fractured drive. For a moment, the screen remained blank. Then, lines of code began to appear, faster than she could comprehend.

"Here we go," Cipher muttered.

The tracer beeped sharply, signaling a location. Ashira's eyes widened as a map appeared on the screen, marking a point deep within the city's abandoned industrial district.

"That's close," she said, her voice tight.

Cipher smirked grimly. "Close is good. It means we don't have to wait for the Network to come to us."

As the first rays of sunlight broke through the clouds, they descended from the rooftop and prepared for their next move.
