"I'll go ask Manager Jin from Tianyuan Group for help! He's influential and can speak on behalf of Tianyuan," said Huo Beiting, feeling the idea was plausible.
"I'll offer him plenty of benefits!"
The old man, Huo Lao, weakly closed his eyes. "Go ahead."
Human greed knows no bounds, he thought.
Huo Beiting immediately stood up and rushed out of the room.
Wang Fengxian was furious and maliciously said, "Dad, do you think Huo Xingzhou might have colluded with Tianyuan Group to set a trap, just waiting for Beiting to walk right into it? The more I think about it, the more something doesn't feel right."
"You, a woman, what do you understand?" Huo Jianjun waved his hand dismissively, clearly annoyed. "Go out and prepare something for your father to eat. I need to talk to him."
"Fine."
Wang Fengxian left angrily, slamming the door behind her.
"Dad." Huo Jianjun sat at the bedside, looking at his father. "Don't be mad at Beiting. He just wants to prove himself to you."
"Ha. Prove himself? He lost ten billion for the Huo family and gave away 20% of the shares. Is that what you call proving himself?"
Huo Lao's heart burned with fury, his frail body alternating between hot and cold.
"I'll teach him a good lesson when he comes back."
"Jianjun, you're my most beloved son." Huo Lao sighed. "I'm getting old. I don't want to see things like family disputes over inheritance. The last car accident was bad enough; I don't want to see something like that again."
Huo Jianjun was startled!
So the old man knew about the accident.
"Yes," he replied nervously.
"Find Cheng Han for me again. My bones ache. I can't keep taking painkillers every day."
"Zhuo Feng…"
"Don't try to fool me with Zhuo Feng. I know what kind of person he is, I just didn't want to shatter the second branch's hope."
The old man's resentment was clear.
Huo Jianjun nodded in agreement.
"Go on, clean up this mess."
After this setback, the Huo family would have to look at Tianyuan Group's face to continue.
Nightfall arrived.
The news of the discovery of a Ming dynasty princess's tomb in the western suburbs of Haicheng had already hit the headlines. The Huo family had suffered heavy losses due to the suspension of work.
Huo Beiting had arranged to meet Jin Kai, the project manager from Tianyuan Group, at Jinling Garden for dinner and drinks. He still had faint marks of a slap on his face.
As soon as he entered the private room, the large redwood table was covered with bottles of Maotai and red wine.
Jin Kai, lounging comfortably in a soft chair, had a kind expression, with a beer belly resembling a Buddha.
"Huo Young Master."
"Manager Jin, you're too kind. Just call me Beiting," Huo Beiting bowed slightly, lacking dignity. He still wore his gold-rimmed glasses and looked as proper as ever.
He walked over to Jin Kai's side and filled his glass.
"Manager Jin, you must be aware of my intentions. If you help me through this, I'll make sure to reward you generously."
Jin Kai laughed heartily. "That's 20% of the Huo family's shares, after all."
"That's a company bet. The benefits I offer are just for you personally. Everything's negotiable," Huo Beiting explained.
"Show me some sincerity first, Young Master Huo. Let me see it."
"What sincerity do you want?"
Jin Kai casually glanced at him. "I've arranged all the drinks on this table for you. It cost me quite a bit. Don't let my goodwill go to waste."
Huo Beiting's face alternated between pale and flushed. "Are you messing with me?"
"You don't have to drink if you don't want to."
After a moment's hesitation, Huo Beiting, seething with anger, uncorked the bottle and began to drink.
The strong liquor burned his throat.
One bottle after another.
By the third bottle, his mind started to blur, and he collapsed to the floor.
Jin Kai stood up and kicked Huo Beiting, who was sprawled like a dead dog. "Tch, you're pathetic."
"Mmm… don't touch me," Huo Beiting mumbled, his speech slurred.
Jin Kai crouched down and slapped his face lightly. "Young Master Huo, get up and keep drinking. Otherwise, you'll have to transfer the shares to Tianyuan Group."
"No… I can't drink anymore."
"I heard your cousin, Huo Xingzhou, is a genius, but you're just mediocre. He's far more capable than you." Jin Kai deliberately provoked him.
"Bullshit! He… had a car accident and is disabled. He's nothing. Hahaha."
"Oh, how did he end up in a car accident?"
Jin Kai sat down on the carpet, chatting casually with him.
Half an hour later.
Jin Kai came out of the room and entered the next one, respectfully addressing, "Mr. Huo."
In the dim light, a man sat in a wheelchair, his features sharp and cold. A monitoring screen was in front of him, and he knew everything that had transpired in Room 818.
"This is the recording you asked for." Jin Kai handed him the recorder.
Zhou Yu, lounging nearby, smirked. "They'll never expect Tianyuan Group belongs to you. Those 20% of shares are now yours."
"I'm looking forward to seeing their faces when they find out the truth," Zhou Yu laughed. "Huo Er, this is a masterstroke! Impressive!"
Huo Xingzhou smiled mockingly. He had given the main branch a chance.
His moment of mercy almost cost him his life.
"Jin Kai, you did well."
"Thank you, Mr. Huo. It's an honor to be recognized by you."
Every Tianyuan employee would covet such an opportunity.
"Mr. Huo, what should we do with the drunk next door?"
"Do as you please."
Huo Xingzhou gently stroked his fingertips, speaking indifferently.
Jin Kai understood his meaning—don't let Huo Beiting have an easy time.
"Understood."
"Zhou Yu, take me home."
"Mr. Huo, you really don't hold back," Zhou Yu muttered as he pushed Huo Xingzhou's wheelchair out. "Why the rush to go home? Eager to enjoy your wife's company, huh?"
A married man, after all, must be family-oriented.
"Home. Take medicine."
Qiao Xi had already warmed the medicine for him.
"Even drinking medicine sounds so sweet. Huo Er, are you sick in the head?" Zhou Yu teased.
"You're the one with a problem."
Zhou Yu dutifully helped Huo Xingzhou back home, and when they arrived, Qiao Xi hurried out, calling out affectionately, "Mr. Huo."
But it was Zhou Yu who got out of the car first, watching them with a teasing smile.
"Zhou Yu."
Qiao Xi's heart skipped a beat.
"I'm taking your Mr. Huo home. He's been thinking about his medicine," Zhou Yu said, giving them space as he left.
Qiao Xi walked behind Huo Xingzhou, pushing him toward the living room.
"Does Zhou Yu know everything that Mr. Huo has done?" she asked softly.
"Yes."
Huo Xingzhou responded softly.
Qiao Xi suddenly leaned in and sniffed his shirt. "Did you drink?"
"I was feeling a little happy. Had a drink," he admitted. He'd been holding back pain for so long, and today, he had won a small victory.
It felt so good!
"I told you, you can't drink during your recovery," she said, her tone cold as she grew upset.
Huo Xingzhou softened his voice. "I won't do it again."
Qiao Xi noticed the time he had drunk, then hurried to the kitchen to fetch a bowl of dark, bitter medicine. She placed it in front of him.
"Mr. Huo, drink up."
Huo Xingzhou took a sip, his face instantly contorting in disgust.
The bitterness spread throughout his mouth, lingering in his stomach. He thought, so the little white rabbit has a temper too. He finished the bowl in one go.
He placed the empty bowl in front of her, asking, "Is your anger gone?"
"I wasn't angry."
"Then why did you add Coptis?" He countered.
"How did you know I added… you tricked me," Qiao Xi complained. "Coptis clears heat, dries dampness, and detoxifies. It's for your benefit."
Huo Xingzhou smiled slyly, watching her with interest. "Little miracle doctor, do you know how bitter Coptis is?"
"I know. I've tried all sorts of herbs."
"But you don't know how bitter the Coptis I drink is."
He suddenly leaned in, his lips brushing hers, and the lingering taste of medicine transferred to her lips.
The bitterness spread.
His revenge was cruel!
Qiao Xi clenched her fists and stood up abruptly. "I won't tease you again!"
She stormed upstairs, her steps echoing.
