13: The Rising Tensions

As Alina's influence in court began to grow, so did the animosity toward her. Lady Vivienne and her faction of nobles openly opposed Alina's presence, claiming that she was a spy sent to manipulate the king. Kael did little to quell these rumors, often watching from the sidelines as Alina navigated the treacherous waters of court politics.

But Alina had learned to adapt. She attended every banquet, every gathering, listening carefully to the conversations around her and slowly building a network of allies among the lesser nobles and servants. She knew that if she was to survive, she needed support beyond just Kael's reluctant protection.

One evening, during a grand banquet in the palace's opulent dining hall, Lady Vivienne decided to strike. The nobles were gathered, laughter and music filling the air, when Lady Vivienne stood and raised her glass.

"A toast," she announced, her voice carrying above the din. "To our brave Princess Alina, who has come all the way from Veloria to grace us with her presence. Tell us, Princess, how do you find our kingdom? Surely it is different from your own... softer lands?"

There was a mocking edge to her words, and the room fell silent, all eyes turning to Alina. She could feel the trap closing around her, but she refused to let Vivienne have the upper hand.

"It is indeed different," Alina said, raising her own glass. "In Veloria, we value resilience and the strength to endure, even in the harshest of conditions. It is something I see mirrored here in Castary." She let her gaze flicker to Kael, who watched her with an inscrutable expression. "Perhaps we are not so different after all."

The subtle barb was not lost on the crowd, and a ripple of approval spread through the room. Lady Vivienne's smile faltered, but she quickly recovered, her eyes flashing with renewed hatred.
