32: The Slow Thaw

Despite Kael's cold demeanor, Alina began to notice small, almost imperceptible changes in his behavior. He would appear at the strangest times, watching her from the shadows, always with that unreadable expression. When Alina received news from Veloria—word of her ailing father—Kael personally delivered the letter to her chambers, his voice unusually soft.

"It seems your father's condition has worsened," he said, his eyes searching her face for a reaction.

Alina's hands trembled as she read the letter, her heart breaking. She had been so far from home, unable to do anything for her family. Tears welled in her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

"If there is anything you need…" Kael's voice trailed off, and Alina looked up, surprised by the genuine concern in his eyes. But just as quickly, he turned away, the walls between them slamming back into place.

Alina couldn't shake the feeling that beneath Kael's harsh exterior, there was a man struggling with his own demons.
