35: The Unraveling

The days following her encounter with Kael were fraught with tension. Alina continued her search for answers, determined to understand the man behind the legend. She knew she was treading on dangerous ground, but she could not stop now. The secrets of the palace were like a puzzle, each piece revealing more than she had anticipated.

One evening, as she was making her way back to her chambers, she was intercepted by Mara, who handed her a small, folded note. "Be careful, Your Highness," the servant girl whispered before disappearing into the shadows.

The note was written in a hurried, almost frantic script: Meet me in the east tower tonight. There are things you need to know.

Alina's instincts screamed that it was a trap, but her curiosity got the better of her. That night, she donned a dark cloak and made her way to the east tower. The corridors were eerily quiet, and the flickering torchlight cast long shadows on the walls.

When she reached the tower, she found a figure waiting in the darkness. It was Lord Alistair, the man whose name she had seen repeatedly in the hidden chronicles. His once-proud face was now gaunt, his eyes sunken with a haunted look.

"I don't have much time," Alistair said, his voice a harsh whisper. "Kael—he was never meant to be king. He was only a pawn. But when he discovered the plot against him, he struck first. The blood on his hands… it was all in the name of survival."

Alina's heart raced. "Why are you telling me this?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.

"Because you may be the only one who can change his fate," Alistair said urgently. "Kael is not the monster they say he is, but he is becoming one. If you can reach him, perhaps he can still be saved."

Before Alina could ask more, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed up the stairwell. Alistair's eyes widened in panic. "Go!" he urged, shoving her toward a hidden door. "If they find you here, they will kill us both."

Alina slipped through the secret passage just as guards burst into the room. As she fled back to her chambers, her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. Everything she had believed about Kael was being turned upside down, and now, more than ever, she realized she was caught in a game far more dangerous than she had anticipated.

But one thing was clear: Kael was not simply her captor. He was a man on the brink of losing himself, and if she did not act soon, it might be too late to save him—or herself.
