37: A Dangerous Game

The next day, Alina was summoned to a meeting with Kael and his council. The air in the throne room was thick with tension as Kael outlined plans to tighten security within the palace. Someone had been feeding the rebels vital information, and Kael was determined to root out the traitor.

Alina stood quietly at the back of the room, listening as the council members argued over the best course of action. She could see the strain on Kael's face, the way his hands clenched the armrests of his throne. He was a man on the edge, surrounded by enemies both seen and unseen.

As the meeting drew to a close, Kael's gaze fell on her. "Stay," he commanded as the others filed out. Once they were alone, he leaned back in his chair, his eyes studying her intently.

"You've been silent," he remarked. "What do you think we should do?"

Alina was taken aback. This was the first time Kael had ever asked for her opinion. She chose her words carefully. "The palace is filled with people who have much to gain from your downfall. But increasing the security will only drive them further into the shadows. You need to lure them out, not chase them deeper underground."

Kael's eyes narrowed, but there was a glimmer of curiosity in his gaze. "And how would you suggest we do that?"

"By making them believe they are winning," Alina replied. "Let them think they have the upper hand, and they will grow careless."

For a moment, Kael was silent, his gaze piercing through her. Then, to her surprise, he nodded. "Very well. We will try it your way," he said, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips. "But if this fails, I will hold you responsible."

Alina's heart pounded, but she met his gaze without flinching. "Understood, Your Majesty."
