Gu Shengsheng took a deep, steadying breath and stepped forward, her footsteps quiet on the polished marble floor. Mo Qingcheng remained oblivious to her presence, too engrossed in the conversation with his family. Her eyes never left his face, drinking in the sight of him as her heart pounded softly in her chest. She nudged her brother, clearing her throat to announce her presence.
Mo Qingcheng's head turned sharply, his gaze locking onto Gu Shengsheng's. A hint of a warm smile played on his lips as he stood up, his movement fluid and effortless. "Good morning," he said, his voice low and smooth, as he slowly stood in front of her.
"Morning," Gu Shengsheng replied, her voice barely above a whisper, as she looked around at the unfamiliar faces in front of her. She felt a flutter of nervousness in her stomach. "I didn't intrude, did I?" she asked, her eyes darting back to Mo Qingcheng's face.
He gently held her shoulders, his touch sending a spark of electricity through her body. "You are not intruding," he reassured her, his smile warm and comforting. "Let me introduce you to my family." He pulled her slightly closer, his eyes never leaving hers.
Gu Shengsheng's palms grew sweaty as she smiled awkwardly, her heart racing with anticipation. What if they didn't like her? She felt like she was on trial, waiting for their verdict.
Mo Qingcheng's mother, an elegant woman with a kind face, stepped forward. "I finally have a daughter-in-law," she exclaimed, her eyes shining with warmth. She gently hugged Gu Shengsheng, who felt a lump form in her throat.
The gesture brought back memories of her late mother, and Gu Shengsheng's eyes teared up. She felt a pang of sadness and longing.
"Mom, you've made her cry," Mingxia said, biting her lip to avoid laughing at her brother's annoyed expression.
Mo Qingcheng's mother looked guilty, her eyes apologetic. "Sorry, I was just reminded of my own mother," Gu Shengsheng explained, her voice barely above a whisper.
The atmosphere in the room shifted, becoming more somber. Mo Qingcheng's family exchanged sympathetic glances, their expressions understanding.
