"Braised prawns in oil!"
"Supreme crab stew!"
"Captain's braised pork!"
"Xiangnan roasted suckling pig!"
Hong Ying, with her arms full of dishes and meat, was happily shouting in the street, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Lin QiYe and Si Xiaonan followed behind, also carrying ingredients, looking at Hong Ying in front of them with helpless sighs.
"Sis Hong Ying, can you not be so conspicuous on the street? People are giving us weird looks..." Si Xiaonan whispered.
Hong Ying waved it off nonchalantly. "Who cares? We've been cooped up in the office for so long; it's rare we get a break. Why should we care about other people's opinions? Besides, it's the New Year—let's just enjoy it, right, QiYe, my little brother?"
Hong Ying wrapped her arm around Lin QiYe's neck, smiling cheerfully.
Lin QiYe sighed helplessly. "By the way, has anything mysterious happened while I was away?"
"Oh, there was something," Hong Ying thought for a moment. "But it was just a lizard at the Pool Realm level. It was fast and couldn't be killed no matter how we tried, but it wasn't anything special. Compared to something like the Nandu snake demon, which had insane intelligence, it was much simpler."
"Couldn't be killed?" Lin QiYe asked in surprise. "So how did you deal with it?"
"It couldn't be killed by slashing, but that doesn't mean my gun and firepower couldn't do the job," Hong Ying said, hands on her hips, sounding proud. "Honestly, I just fired one shot, and it died."
"…" Lin QiYe was silent for a moment.
"But there's something strange about it," Hong Ying added.
"Strange?" Lin QiYe asked.
"After I killed the lizard, when the support team came to check, it was only half of its body left…"
"Only half left?" Lin QiYe frowned slightly, as if something clicked in his mind.
"Yeah, I think my Rosefire Feather Cloak was too strong and just burned it up. But the Captain and Wu Xiangnan think it's not so simple, because the head of the Nandu snake demon still hasn't been found since last time…"
"Someone's secretly collecting the bodies of mysteries?" Lin QiYe mused.
"I don't know." Lin QiYe frowned, thinking for a moment, then shook his head. After all, he was still a trainee Nightwatcher, about to return to training camp soon. There was no point in worrying about these things now. He decided to leave it to the Captain and Wu Xiangnan to handle.
The three of them slowly walked down the street and entered a relatively quiet alley. Just then, a shadow shot through the air, heading straight for Lin QiYe!
With his mundane divine domain, Lin QiYe reacted immediately. Before the object could even reach him, he smoothly sidestepped, and a wave of darkness exploded around him, centered on his body!
Whoosh—!
It was a small metal arrow. Although it was fast, the arrowhead wasn't sharp. Upon impact with the asphalt road, the arrow bounced up and fell to the ground with a clanging sound.
Then, the darkness completely enveloped the arrow.
To Lin QiYe's surprise, there was no explosion. The metal arrow lay quietly on the road, almost like a harmless joke.
Both Lin QiYe and Hong Ying turned to look. Across from them, on a tall building, a figure dressed in a black cloak stood, a shadow cast by his hood perfectly hiding his face from view.
Seeing that they had noticed him, the figure immediately put away his crossbow and turned to flee in the opposite direction.
"Looking for death?!" Hong Ying sneered, passing Lin QiYe the two large bags of ingredients. Then, her body blurred, leaving behind an afterimage as she chased after the figure.
"You guys head back. I'll go see who dares to be so reckless in front of me!"
The figure had already disappeared, and Hong Ying's voice echoed faintly through the air. Lin QiYe stood by the roadside, frowning slightly.
What was this?
An ambush?
The attack was of such a low level that anyone with decent reflexes could easily avoid it. Let alone someone like him, a Double God proxy.
And with the power behind the arrow, even if it hit, it wouldn't have been fatal. Was the arrow poisoned?
Lin QiYe crouched down and carefully examined the metal arrow. He extended his spiritual sense and scanned it thoroughly.
Suddenly, he sharply pulled the small roll of paper from the tail of the arrow. He unfurled it in his palm…
The next second, his pupils shrank to a narrow sliver!
Lin QiYe tightly clenched the paper in his hand, without a word, he quickly handed all the bags to Si Xiaonan, almost crushing him under their weight.
"Xiaonan, take these back for now. I've got something else to do."
Lin QiYe rushed off without another word, his speed leaving no time for Si Xiaonan to respond.
Standing in the empty alley, Si Xiaonan, weighed down by the bags, stared in stunned silence at Lin QiYe's disappearing figure. After a moment, he pouted, feeling a bit left behind…
…
At some point, snowflakes began to fall again.
The thick snow from last night had yet to melt. The sidewalks, covered with footprints and dirt, were now coated with fresh snow. Lin QiYe's figure quickly darted through the streets.
He crossed two intersections, found the black van parked in the parking lot, and pulled two black boxes from the back. Like a gust of wind, he ran off again.
He dashed to the roadside, glanced around anxiously, his frown deepening.
Although Lin QiYe was now an adult, he had never gotten his driver's license, so he couldn't drive the team's vehicle. And with it being New Year's Eve, there wasn't a single taxi in sight.
After a brief hesitation, Lin QiYe gritted his teeth and decided to carry the black boxes and run towards the Old District.
The note in his palm was already soaked with sweat.
It was a simple sentence, but it pierced through Lin QiYe's mental defenses with ease.
"Old District 3901, someone is targeting your family."
The handwriting on the note was shaky and clearly written with the left hand, indicating the person who wrote it didn't want to reveal their identity. Yet, they had precisely given the address…
That address.
The one he had always worried about, yet could never approach.
It was his home.
Who wrote this note? How did they know all this? Was it true? Why did they send this message? What role did this person play in the attack?
These questions whirled through Lin QiYe's mind, but right now, he had no time to think.
All that mattered now was one thought:
Whoever dares to harm my Aunt and Ah Jin…
Even if it's Yama himself, I will kill them!
Through the snow, the young man, carrying the two black boxes, moved like a shadow, his killing intent rising higher than ever before!
