Kai stormed into his house, his grip on the large envelope so tight that his knuckles turned white. His entire body vibrated with rage, his mind clouded with fury. He didn't bother to remove his coat or loosen his tie. The front door swung open with such force that it slammed against the wall, the loud bang echoing through the house.
His chest heaved as he stood there, eyes darting around the entryway, desperately searching for any sign of her. The house was silent, too quiet, the kind of silence that made everything feel heavier. His grip on the envelope was so tight, the paper was beginning to crease under his fingers, but he didn't care. He was beyond caring.
"Adalaine!" His voice tore through the stillness, sharp and jagged, like a blade slicing through the air. He didn't care if she heard the anger in his tone. He needed answers, and he needed them now.
The silence stretched on. No answer.
