Shadows in the Dark

Lena's POV

The message on Reed's phone lingered in Lena's mind long after he left. The words were burned into her thoughts, stirring up more uncertainty than ever.

"Walk away, or you'll regret it."

If Reed was telling the truth, then someone was threatening him, too. And if that was the case, had she been wrong to suspect him?

She sat at her desk, staring at the city lights beyond her office window. The tension in the room was thick, and Elias had barely moved from his position near the door, arms crossed, his expression unreadable.

Finally, he spoke. "You don't believe him, do you?"

Lena tore her gaze away from the window. "I don't know."

Elias scoffed. "Come on, Lena. The timing is too perfect. We start cornering him, and suddenly, he's a victim, too?"

She exhaled, rubbing her temples. "I don't want to ignore the possibility that he's being honest. What if we're looking in the wrong direction?"
