Ryle's steps were quick as he walked through the empty streets, the sounds of the city slowly filling his ears. But in his mind, it was all quiet. He couldn't stop thinking about the dream—the bridge, the river, and Faith. It had been so long since he last saw her, and yet, she still seemed so close, like a memory that wouldn't leave him.
He wasn't sure what he was hoping for, but something about today felt different. Maybe it was the feeling that the dreams weren't just dreams anymore. Maybe it was because he had been thinking about Faith so much, wondering if he'd ever see her again.
He started walking again, each step feeling harder than the last. The weight of everything—the memories, the things left unsaid was starting to feel too much.
When he finally reached the bridge, he stopped again and leaned against the railing, looking at the river below. The sound of the water rushing by made him feel a little calmer. It was like the world had paused for a moment, leaving him alone with his thoughts.
Ryle closed his eyes for a second, trying to take a deep breath and clear his head. He didn't know what he was waiting for maybe a sign, maybe the courage to face whatever was coming.
"Ryle?"
The voice snapped him back to reality. For a moment, he wasn't sure if he had imagined it.
He turned slowly, his heart beating faster. But it wasn't her.
A woman stood a few feet away, looking at him with curiosity. She wasn't Faith.
"Sorry, I thought I knew you," she said, smiling politely.
"It's okay," Ryle replied quietly.
The woman nodded and walked away, leaving Ryle alone by the bridge again. He felt a little disappointed, even though he hadn't been sure what he was expecting. Maybe it was foolish to think that coming here would bring him closer to what he wanted.
He sighed and looked back at the river, the current flowing below. It felt strange. His phone buzzed in his pocket, making him startled slightly. He pulled it out and saw a message from Lucas: "Still out there? I was thinking about what you said. You alright?"
Ryle stared at the screen for a while, unsure of what to say. How could he explain this feeling he couldn't shake off? How could he tell anyone about the strange mix of longing and loss that was swimming inside him?
He typed a quick reply: "Yeah, just thinking."
He put the phone back in his pocket and stood there, unsure of what to do next. There was so much on his mind, but he didn't know how to share it with anyone.
He stayed by the bridge, watching the river for a while longer. In that moment, Ryle realized he didn't have all the answers. But maybe he didn't need them right now. Maybe it was okay to just wait and see what happened next.
For now, that was enough.
