Kai walked alongside Leilani and Sam, the heavy silence between them broken only by the rhythmic sound of their footsteps.

The chief had given him permission to step out of the office to follow up on the case, and he took the opportunity to gain more insight into Sam's situation. Leilani, however, was not one to remain quiet for long.

"Sam, why didn't you tell me?" she asked for the third time, her voice a mixture of frustration and worry. "How could you let this go on for so long without saying a word?"

At that moment Sam sighed heavily, his shoulders slumping as though the weight of the world rested upon them.

"Mom, I didn't tell you because…" He paused, his jaw tightening. Finally, he turned to her, his voice rising in exasperation.

"They said they'd kill you if I ever complained!"
