Chapter 10 The Wife in Poverty (10)

Su Li made herself more comfortable on the sofa before slowly saying, "This time, I'm not here to ask for your opinions; I'm just here to tell you my decision."

"You are my parents, and I respect you, but I would like to request that you also respect my thoughts. Is that possible?"

Su Li's polite words did not win Mr. Su's understanding; instead, they made him even more furious.

"What on earth is so bad about Chen Jin that you desperately want a divorce?"

"In the Su Family, we've never had a precedent for divorce. Forget about it. If you insist on getting a divorce, then don't consider us your parents anymore."

"Causing a divorce scene like this, what do you think relatives, friends, and neighbors will think of me and your mom? Do you think a divorced woman, a second-time bride, will end up with anything good?"

Mr. Su clenched his fists, the veins on his neck bulging, a frightening look on his face, his words spiteful and malicious.

This didn't sound like scolding meant for a daughter; it was more like facing an enemy.

If this had been the old Su Li, facing her father's unchecked verbal blades would have further lacerated an already wounded heart.

The most hurtful, the deadliest blows often come from the closest people.

Su Li suddenly understood why the original had given up on life uncontrollably.

She probably just couldn't hold on any longer.

Su Li remained silent, just quietly watching...

Watching Mr. Su and Mrs. Su, like caged animals, venting their anger in the room.

When the two in front of her finally ran out of steam, their voices gradually lowering, Su Li emotionlessly threw down a stack of papers.

Inside were photos of Chen Jin with Liu Yin in the same room, and explicit pictures of the two together from last night.

"The good son-in-law you think so highly of has cheated..."

Mrs. Su, trembling, picked up the photos and burst into tears, "Damn it, I thought he was a good one..."

"Xiao Li, what are you going to do now?"

Mr. Su too, like a duck whose neck had been grabbed, immediately drooped his head, the anger he had earlier nowhere to be seen.

Mrs. Su, fiercely clenching the stack of photos, was about to rush out the door, "I'm going to the Chen Family, to ask them how they educate their children."

But before Mrs. Su could move, Mr. Su stopped her.

He growled lowly, "Isn't this shameful enough?"

Mr. Su irritably pulled out a cigarette, took a deep drag, then turned to Su Li and said sternly, "This might be the first time for Chen Jin; men might make mistakes in this regard. As long as he sincerely repents, Xiao Li, just forgive him."

"Later, let that youngster come apologize to you..."

"The children are still young; they can't grow up without a father. Besides, everyone has seen how he has treated you over the years."

"Everyone should take a step back and think about it; isn't there something that you didn't handle well..."

Mrs. Su also reacted, taking Su Li's hand and softly saying, "Yeah, you guys still have kids..."

"Making a big deal out of this isn't good for anyone's face..."

Taken aback, Su Li laughed coldly.

She should not have expected anything from these parents; they seemed to care more about appearances.

Under Mrs. Su's surprised gaze, Su Li slowly withdrew her hand and stood up, her question tinged with sarcasm, "Am I even your real daughter?"

Now that the company matters were settled, Chen Jin finally had some time to think.

But before he could settle his thoughts, a call came from home.

Father Chen's loud scolding burst through the phone, leaving Chen Jin bewildered.

"Dad, why are you so angry today?"

"How dare you ask that? Don't you know what you've done? Come home right this instant..."

With a "clack", the phone call was abruptly cut off.

Chen Jin, shrouded in confusion, was ignorant of what had happened, but a sense of anxiety suddenly surged within him.

This intuition made him leave the house without even grabbing his coat, taking only his car keys with him.

Outside, Liu Yin anxiously waited, distractedly going through her work but keeping her eyes glued to the vice president's office.

As soon as Chen Jin stepped out, she put aside her work, straightened her dress, and swayed gracefully to greet him.

But Chen Jin didn't even notice Liu Yin's presence; his mind was wholly troubled by the phone call they had just had.

As they brushed past each other, Liu Yin faced an awkward moment.

Their colleagues whispered among themselves, then she blushed with embarrassment.

Chen Jin rushed back hurriedly and just as he opened the door, a stainless steel ashtray greeted him.

Luckily, his reaction was quick. He dodged, and the ashtray brushed past his ear and smashed against the half-open door frame.

Chen Jin was startled and turned to see a small dent in the door frame, showing the force with which it had been thrown.

Had it hit his head, it would have surely caused severe injury.

Not only was Chen Jin startled, but Mrs. Chen too burst into tears because of Father Chen's actions.

With a cry in her voice, she began to make a scene.

"Old Chen, what are you doing?"

"Do you want to kill your son? Well then, you might as well kill me first..."

Chen Jin couldn't understand why his father was so furious, why his mother, who always composed herself with elegance and restraint, was now resorting to such dramatics.

Mrs. Chen stood in front of Chen Jin, eyeing Father Chen with a guard-like gaze, fearing he might lose his sanity again and harm their precious son.

Her son wasn't at fault, it was all Su Li's meddling.

Men are like cats; they all stray, so why escalate the issue and make everyone unhappy?

As long as he took care of his family and came home, that was enough.

That's what Mrs. Chen believed and conveyed.

"My son just made a small error, he'll correct it later… If you ask me, it takes two to tango. Why doesn't Su Li consider whether she did something wrong herself?"

"Also, you saw for yourself her arrogant attitude, disrespectful to her elders. The moment she spoke, she was spouting madness, outright demanding a divorce from our Chen Jin... even wanting to take the child..."

"We'll go right now to Old Su and ask how he raised his daughter..."

Mrs. Chen grew increasingly angry as she spoke, and was about to head next door to the Su Family to confront them when,

"Bang…" a loud noise erupted,

Father Chen slammed his teacup onto the floor.

"Have you caused enough trouble? Aren't you embarrassed enough?"

"Those photos, have you not seen enough of them, or what? Do you want to have my face ground into the dirt again?"

Mrs. Chen also seemed to remember the evidence that Su Li had laid out, those photos and videos that were too shameful to speak of.

Immediately, the previously furious Mrs. Chen deflated like a frost-bitten eggplant.
