Chapter 13: Something I Can't Ignore

The Next Day.

Morning.

Kaori doesn't show up to school.

At first, I don't think much of it. Maybe she's running late. Maybe she just didn't feel like coming today.

But as the hours pass, an odd sense of unease settles in.

By lunchtime, it's clear—she's not coming at all.

"She caught a cold," one of the girls in class murmurs, casually stirring her drink. "Apparently, she got soaked in the rain last night."

I pause mid-bite, my grip tightening slightly around my chopsticks.

Kaori got sick.

A quiet sigh leaves my lips as I glance down at my bag—the weight of my uniform jacket still resting inside. The same jacket I draped over her shoulders last night.

Figures.

Somehow, I'm not even surprised.

...

After lunch, I lean back in my chair, pulling out my phone. The classroom buzzes with chatter, but I tune it out, tapping out a quick message.

"Still alive?" I ask.
