Chapter 14.2

"We'll now be moving on to the final event of the evening!"

A burst of static from the festival's speaker system crackles through the air, making me flinch. The distorted noise fades quickly, but the sudden jolt leaves my heart beating faster than it should.

Kaori and I are still walking through the crowded festival grounds, her hand loosely curled around mine. Her fingers are slender and warm, the soft press of her palm against mine steady and unyielding. We've been holding hands for a while now—longer than necessary—but neither of us has made a move to pull away. The heat from our joined hands spreads up my arm, curling into my chest like a slow burn.
