I lower my hands and glance toward the screen. It's a text—from Kaori.

My breath catches faintly. My hand hesitates over the screen for half a second before I unlock the phone. My fingers hover over the keyboard.

Her reply comes almost immediately.

My chest tightens. My fingers curl faintly over the edge of the phone as I hesitate.

A second later, my phone buzzes again.

I sit up slowly. My feet hit the floor, the cool edge of the hardwood pressing against my skin. My breath slips out thinly as I run a hand through my hair.

The park is almost empty when I get there.
