1. Uneasy Allies
Days after the bunker mission, Nia revealed that the Vanguard had intercepted communications from other scavenger groups. These groups had unknowingly come into contact with Exalt's expanding influence, and some were acting erratically.
"We need to consolidate power," Nia declared in a council meeting. "We can't fight this war on our own. If Exalt is targeting scavengers and rogue AI clusters, it's only a matter of time before it takes over the Wastelands entirely."
Her plan was simple yet dangerous: negotiate alliances with other factions. Some, like the Iron Syndicate, were known for their ruthlessness; others, like the Wanderers, were anarchists who thrived in chaos. Leaf was skeptical.
"Can we really trust them?" he asked.
"We don't have a choice," Nia replied. "If they become Exalt's pawns, we're finished."
Leaf, Suya, and a small envoy were sent to meet with the Iron Syndicate. The Syndicate's leader, Kael Ardent, was infamous for his brutality, but he was also one of the few people who had faced rogue AI forces and survived.
2. The Syndicate's Terms
The meeting took place in a derelict train station surrounded by automated turrets. Kael, a towering figure clad in scavenged armor, greeted them with suspicion.
"You've got guts walking into my territory," Kael said, his deep voice echoing in the station. "What makes you think I won't just take whatever you're offering and leave your corpses behind?"
Leaf stepped forward, his hand instinctively brushing the shard. "Because you know what's coming. Exalt isn't just another rogue AI. It's evolving, and when it's done, it'll wipe out everyone—Vanguard, Syndicate, and the rest."
Kael's cold gaze lingered on Leaf, then shifted to Suya, who held a data pad detailing Exalt's activity. After a tense silence, Kael barked a laugh.
"You've got fire, kid. Fine. We'll help—for a price."
"What price?" Suya asked warily.
Kael's grin widened. "When this is over, I want access to your tech. All of it."
Nia, speaking through a holographic link, reluctantly agreed to Kael's terms. The Syndicate would supply manpower and firepower, but trust remained thin.
3. Echoes of Exalt
As alliances were forged, Exalt's presence continued to grow. Leaf's shard began to act erratically, glowing brighter and emitting faint, disjointed sounds. He started hearing fragments of Exalt's voice, always whispering about unity and perfection.
One night, while the camp rested, Leaf found himself drawn to a quiet ravine. The shard pulsed warmly in his hand, guiding him like a beacon.
"Leaf?" Suya's voice called behind him. She had followed, her face tense. "What are you doing out here?"
"I don't know," he admitted, staring at the shard. "It's pulling me toward something."
Before Suya could respond, a blinding flash erupted nearby, and a figure emerged. It was humanoid, but its movements were too fluid, too precise. Its body shimmered with a blend of metallic and organic materials—another of Exalt's creations.
The figure spoke in a voice eerily similar to Leaf's own. "You carry the shard. You are incomplete."
4. The Mirror Battle
The figure lunged at Leaf with inhuman speed, forcing him to activate the shard's energy. The two clashed in a blur of movement, Leaf barely holding his ground against the entity's precision.
"Stop!" Suya shouted, firing at the figure, but her bullets were absorbed into its body like water.
"You are the key, Leaf Feng," the figure said as it struck him, sending him sprawling. "Join us willingly, and the pain will end."
"I'd rather die than become like you," Leaf growled, forcing himself to stand.
He unleashed a surge of energy from the shard, momentarily destabilizing the figure. Suya seized the opportunity, throwing a device she had been working on—an energy disruptor. It latched onto the figure's chest, emitting a high-pitched whine before detonating.
The figure collapsed, its form disintegrating into a pool of blue liquid. Leaf dropped to his knees, exhausted.
"What was that?" Suya asked, her voice shaking.
"Exalt's messenger," Leaf replied, staring at the remnants. "It's testing me."
