The room was a battlefield of chaos and carnage. Shattered debris littered the ground, mixed with black ichor that oozed from The Nihilum's wounds. The Vanguard, relentless and unyielding, stood amidst the destruction, its chains whipping around it like living serpents. Despite his monstrous form, Michael's movements faltered, the toll of the fight evident in every labored strike.
"Come on, Michael!" Ryan shouted, his voice raw from desperation. "You've got this! Don't let that thing win!"
The Nihilum responded with a guttural roar, a sound that echoed with fury and pain. Tendrils of shadow lashed out from its body, slamming into the Vanguard with enough force to send it skidding back. The impact left jagged fissures in the ground, the sheer strength behind it shaking the walls.
But the Vanguard recovered quickly, its movements unnatural as it surged forward again. It raised a clawed hand and brought it down on The Nihilum's shoulder, tearing through the dark matter as if it were paper. Shards of blackened flesh sprayed across the room, some landing dangerously close to the crew.
Jean ducked behind a pile of rubble, his breathing ragged. "Is this what we signed up for? Watching two monsters tear each other apart?"
"It's not just them," Eva snapped, crouched beside him. Her blade was in her hand, though she knew it would be useless against either of the entities. "This fight is our fight too. If Michael loses, that thing won't stop with him."
Ryan fired another burst from his rifle, the bullets sparking harmlessly against the Vanguard's armor of shadows. "We've got to do something! He's barely holding on!"
Inside The Nihilum, Michael felt his body deteriorating. Each strike from the Vanguard chipped away at the shadowy armor protecting him, exposing raw wounds beneath. The whispers of the Nihilum's power grew louder, urging him to let go, to unleash destruction without restraint.
"No. I'm still in control. This is my fight…"
But it wasn't just his anymore. The Nihilum's power surged, twisting his form further, jagged spikes protruding from his back as his body warped into something even less human.
The Vanguard capitalized on Michael's moment of hesitation, driving its chains into his chest with a sickening squelch. Black ichor erupted from the wound, splattering the ground in pools that hissed and steamed as they ate through the metal floor. The Nihilum howled in agony, stumbling back as the Vanguard pressed its attack.
"Michael!" Eva screamed, stepping forward despite the danger. "Fight back! Don't let it win!"
Michael turned toward her voice, his glowing red eyes flickering. For a brief moment, she saw him—the real Michael—trapped within the monstrous form.
"I'm trying," he growled, his voice distorted by the Nihilum's influence. "But this thing… it's—"
The Vanguard cut him off with a brutal swing, its claws slashing through his midsection. Blackened chunks of shadowy flesh flew through the air, splattering against the walls. Michael staggered but didn't fall, summoning every ounce of strength he had left.
Ryan and Jean exchanged a glance.
"We can't just stand here!" Jean said, gripping his weapon tightly.
"I know," Ryan replied. "But what the hell are we supposed to do? That thing tore through Michael like he was nothing."
"Then we make sure it doesn't do the same to us," Eva said, her voice firm. She stepped forward, her blade gleaming in the dim light. "If Michael's going down, he's not going alone."
Ryan hesitated, then nodded. "Let's give him an opening."
The crew moved together, a desperate plan forming in the chaos. Ryan fired at the Vanguard's legs, his shots aimed to distract rather than damage. Eva circled to the side, her blade ready to strike at the first opportunity. Jean grabbed a makeshift explosive from his pack, priming it with trembling hands.
The Vanguard noticed them too late. Jean hurled the explosive, the device detonating on impact and engulfing the creature in a fiery blast. The room shook from the force, flames licking at the walls and casting eerie shadows across the battlefield.
"Now, Michael!" Ryan shouted.
The Nihilum seized the opportunity, its form shifting as it unleashed a massive spike from its arm. The jagged weapon impaled the Vanguard, pinning it against the far wall. For a moment, it seemed as if the tide had turned.
Inside the Nihilum, Michael felt a surge of hope.
"This is it. I can end this."
But the Vanguard wasn't finished. Its body shimmered with dark energy, the wound in its chest knitting itself back together as if nothing had happened. With a roar, it broke free from the spike, its chains lashing out with renewed fury.
The fight devolved into a savage brawl. The Nihilum's strikes grew slower, each movement heavy with exhaustion. The Vanguard, by contrast, seemed to gain strength with every passing second, its dark energy swirling more violently than ever.
The crew could only watch as the Vanguard tore into Michael with ruthless precision. It drove its claws into his abdomen, pulling out a chunk of shadowy matter and tossing it aside like garbage. The Nihilum retaliated with a desperate swing, its spiked arm catching the Vanguard across the face and tearing through its shroud.
But it wasn't enough. The Vanguard retaliated with a blow so powerful it sent The Nihilum crashing into the ground, the impact leaving a crater in the floor.
"Michael!" Eva screamed, rushing toward him.
"Stay back!" He screamed, his voice cracking with pain; his plead only coming out as a roar.
Eva froze, her heart pounding. She could see him struggling to rise, his body broken but not yet defeated.
Ryan grabbed her arm, pulling her back. "You'll just get yourself killed!"
"We can't leave him!" she shouted, tears streaming down her face.
"We don't have a choice!" Ryan snapped.
The Vanguard loomed over The Nihilum, its chains coiling like snakes ready to strike. Michael raised an arm, summoning the last of his strength to form a shield of dark matter.
The Vanguard's chains struck the shield, shattering it instantly. The force of the blow sent Michael sprawling, his body barely holding together.
Inside the Nihilum, Michael felt the whispers grow louder, mocking him.
You were never strong enough. You were always meant to fail.
"No," he whispered, his voice weak. "Not like this…"
The Vanguard raised a clawed hand, ready to deliver the final blow.
The crew watched in horror as the Nihilum fell, its form dissolving into a pool of shadowy ichor. Michael's human body lay at the center, broken and bloodied.
The Vanguard turned its attention to the crew, its glowing eyes filled with murderous intent.
"We're next," Jean said, his voice barely a whisper.
Ryan stepped forward, his weapon trembling in his hands. "We're not going down without a fight."
Eva tightened her grip on her blade, her knuckles white.
The Vanguard took a step forward, its chains unfurling like wings of death.
Eva sprinted toward the steaming corpse of The Nihilum, her heart pounding as waves of heat and shadow radiated from the still body. The monstrous figure lay crumpled, its jagged armor shattered, and black ichor pooled beneath it, bubbling and hissing against the metal floor. The air reeked of burnt flesh and sulfur. Every instinct screamed at her to turn back, but she couldn't leave Michael.
"Eva, no!" Ryan shouted, his voice raw. "You'll get yourself killed!"
She ignored him, her focus locked on the corpse. Steam hissed from the massive nape of the fallen entity, and she knew what she had to do. Her blade gleamed faintly as she climbed onto the massive, steaming carcass, the heat scorching her gloves.
"Michael, I'm coming!" she yelled, plunging the blade into the soft, spongy flesh of The Nihilum's nape.
The entity's flesh resisted her, tough and sinewy, like cutting through layers of molten steel. Black ichor sprayed her face, burning her skin as she hacked her way deeper into the steaming cavity. The sounds of battle faded into the background, replaced by the deafening roar of her own heartbeat.
Finally, her blade struck something solid.
"Got you," she murmured through gritted teeth.
With one final slash, she tore into the sinewy bonds holding Michael within. Inside, his body lay crumpled, fused to the monstrous tendrils of The Nihilum. His face was pale, lacerated by deep cuts, and faint, jagged marks etched themselves around his eyes—dark, almost tribal streaks that seemed to pulse faintly with residual energy.
She reached down, grabbing him by the arms, and pulled with all her might.
The fleshy bonds resisted, tightening as if unwilling to let him go. "No!" she growled, her muscles straining as the ichor burned her hands. "You're not taking him!"
With a guttural scream, she ripped Michael free. His body tumbled out of the cavity, steaming and motionless. She collapsed beside him, gasping for air.
"Michael! Wake up!" she cried, shaking him.
He groaned faintly, his eyes fluttering open. "Eva…? What… happened?"
"You're alive, kiddo" she whispered, tears streaking her soot-covered face. "You're safe now."
Ryan and Jean approached cautiously, their weapons drawn. The room was eerily silent now, save for the faint crackle of The Nihilum's decaying body.
As Ryan knelt beside Michael, his eyes locked on the strange marks under his friend's eyes. A sudden flash of memory seared through his mind—a vision from weeks ago, of a darkened room, shadowy figures, and those same jagged patterns glowing ominously.
His head throbbed with pain.
"Those marks…" Ryan muttered, gripping his temple as the memory slipped away like water through his fingers. "I've seen them before."
Jean frowned, glancing between Ryan and Michael. "What do you mean? When?"
"I don't know," Ryan admitted, his voice strained. "But they mean something. I just can't remember what."
The moment was shattered by a bone-chilling roar that echoed through the facility. The Vanguard was still alive.
The creature emerged from the shadows, its grotesque form more monstrous than before. Its chains swirled around it, glowing with dark energy, and its eyes burned with murderous intent. The surviving crew instinctively backed away, their weapons trembling in their hands.
"Get him out of here," Ryan ordered, his voice trembling but firm. "Now!"
Jean and Eva dragged Michael's limp form toward the nearest cover as Ryan stepped forward, leveling his weapon at the advancing monster.
The Vanguard lunged with terrifying speed, its massive claws ripping through the metal floor as it closed the distance. Ryan fired a barrage of rounds, the bullets sparking harmlessly off its dark armor.
"Damn it!" he cursed, diving out of the way as the creature's claw smashed into the wall, sending shards of metal flying.
Jean fired as well, his shots aimed at the Vanguard's legs. "Eva, get him out of here! We'll hold it off!"
Eva hesitated, glancing back at them. "You can't—"
"Go!" Ryan shouted.
The Vanguard tore through the narrow hallway, its chains whipping out like living serpents. One caught Lieutenant Sara as she sprinted for safety, wrapping around her waist and yanking her back with brutal force.
"No! Let me go!" she screamed, clawing at the floor as the chain dragged her toward the creature.
The Vanguard didn't hesitate. Its massive jaws clamped down on her torso, ripping her in half with a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed across the walls as her screams were silenced.
In another corridor, Medic Lucas and Demolitionist Nick ran side by side, their breaths coming in ragged gasps.
"It's gaining on us!" Lucas shouted, glancing over his shoulder.
Nick shoved him forward. "Keep running!"
The Vanguard's chains lashed out, catching Nick's leg and yanking him off his feet. He screamed as the creature loomed over him, its glowing eyes narrowing in predatory delight.
"Lucas, go!" Nick yelled, his voice filled with both terror and resolve.
Lucas hesitated for a split second before obeying, tears streaming down his face as he disappeared into the shadows.
Nick's screams echoed through the hallway as the Vanguard tore into him, scattering his remains across the floor in a grotesque display of violence.
In the main hall, General Cheese stood his ground, his massive frame a bulwark against the advancing horror. He fired round after round from his shotgun, each blast echoing like thunder in the confined space.
"Come on, you son of a bitch!" he roared.
The Vanguard lunged, its chains whipping around Cheese's arm and pulling him toward it. With a guttural scream, it tore his arm from its socket, sending a spray of blood across the floor. Cheese fell to his knees, clutching the stump of his arm as the creature loomed over him.
Before it could strike again, Ninja appeared, dragging Cheese to safety. "We're regrouping," Ninja said, his voice steady despite the chaos.
Eva and Jean managed to pull Michael into a side room, barricading the door behind them. The sound of carnage echoed from the hallways, each scream a reminder of the death that surrounded them.
Michael stirred, his eyes half-lidded as he struggled to speak. "Eva…the marks… are we… going to die?"
"We won't," Eva promised, brushing a hand across his bloodied face. "We're not leaving you."
Jean glanced out the window, his face pale. "We won't last long in here. That thing… it's not stopping."
Eva gritted her teeth, gripping her blade tightly. "Then we fight."
The Vanguard burst into the room moments later, its chains tearing through the barricade as if it were paper. Eva stood her ground, her blade gleaming in the flickering light.
"Come on, you bastard," she hissed.
The creature roared, lunging toward her with murderous intent. Eva dodged the first strike, her blade slashing across its arm. The ichor that sprayed from the wound sizzled as it hit the floor, filling the room with acrid smoke.
Jean fired from behind her, his shots aimed at the creature's exposed back. "Keep it distracted!
Eva nodded, her movements fluid as she dodged another strike. The Vanguard was relentless, its attacks growing faster and more precise with each passing second.
But even as they fought, Eva knew the truth. They couldn't win.
