I shook my head. Not only was my acquaintance with Old Wu limited, but even if it were more substantial, I wouldn’t involve myself in such trivial matters. From what I understood of Old Wu—an unconventional man who approached life as a game—it was unlikely he would agree to such a request.

Seeing my reluctance, Su Mei displayed a hint of disappointment. She drained her glass and then rose to leave, saying, “Well, I suppose that settles it. I’ll return to rest. Oh, by the way, next Wednesday is my birthday. We should have dinner together then…”

“Who’s coming?” I inquired.

“Not many people, just a few close friends…”

I nodded in agreement. In truth, I was not fond of gatherings with large groups, but I had no choice; I owed Su Mei a favour, and this invitation was one I could not decline. Besides, she was quite appealing to me.
