Chapter 144: Catching a Thief

Returning home, after a quick wash, I prepared for bed. Before I could settle, a text message arrived: "Please reply at your convenience!" – Su Mei. I returned her call.

"I've heard about the brilliantly executed plan. Congratulations!"

Lighting a cigarette, I replied, "I owe you; this wouldn't have worked without your help.” It wasn't mere politeness; it was the truth.

"Oh, I wouldn't dare let Master Lupan thank me. I'm satisfied you didn't criticize my performance..." Su Mei joked, a demeanor I preferred over her overly cautious, Elysianne-centric self.

"By the way, Master Lupan, the matriarch just called Elysianne, inquiring about you. It seems she suspects your involvement. Be cautious…"

I wasn't surprised, nor worried. Even if the Zou patriarch and matriarch knew, they wouldn't act against me. Doing so would be an admission of their mistake and a public acknowledgement of their misjudgment involving Eighth Brother and Huang Ze, which they would avoid at all costs.
