Chapter 10: The Lie

I thought the trek from my flat to Ryan's was the longest I had ever taken. Every stride seemed heavier than the previous as if it were echoing my pulse. As I got closer to his door, the knot of dread became tighter and my stomach churned with nervousness. I was aware that I had crossed a boundary that I had never thought I would. However, every other impulse was subdued by the dread of losing everything—the stability, the love, the life we had created together.

"Amelia!" As he opened the door, Ryan's voice was kind and inviting. I felt his comforting warmth envelop me as he extended his arm to embrace me. Even if it meant keeping some of the truth from him, I made an effort to console myself by telling myself that he loved me and that this was the correct decision.

I said, "Hey," and hugged him in return. Even I thought my voice sounded little.

He drew away, grinning as he examined me. Are you alright? You sounded... preoccupied on the phone.
