Chapter 23: Ryan’s Warning

The noise of my phone buzzing on the counter snapped me out of my daze. I paused before grabbing it, already fearing the name that would appear on the display. It was indeed Ryan. The caller ID appeared to taunt me, challenging me to overlook him.

However, I was unable to. Not when the stakes are this high.

“Is anyone there?” I replied, my tone more strained than I meant.

“Amelia,” Ryan spoke in a steady tone, nearly too steady. The type of serenity that gave you goosebumps. "I believe it's time for us to have a conversation."

“I have nothing to tell you, Ryan.”

"That’s alright," he responded calmly. "Since I have much to communicate with you." How about stopping by the coffee shop on Fifth? "I’m certain you’re familiar with that one."

“I’m occupied,” I retorted, already searching for a reason to evade him.
