Chapter 46: Sarah’s Concerns

I sat in the corner booth of the small café, the soft murmur of discussions and clinking glasses in the background hardly noticeable. My fingertips glided along the edge of my coffee mug as steam curled upward in wisps that mirrored the confusion swirling in my thoughts. The past several days had been chaotic, and I was still trying to find my footing.

Sarah's beautiful brown hair caught the light as she entered, and the door chimed. She gave me a pleasant grin when she saw me, but I could see the worry in her eyes before she sat down. She didn't have to say anything to let me know she sensed the storm I was carrying inside.

"Amelia," she whispered gently, sliding into the booth across from me and examining my face. "You appear to have gotten very little sleep."
