First Augments

11:44 AM Streets of District 5...

Rook stared still from a distance with memories flashing reminding his mistake. Weiss noticed as they were driving along the road.

"Did I touch a nerve or something? Is it bad?" Officer Weiss worried for his newly appointed partner for the day.

"Not let's just say I was struck with a collateral and the guy who was supposed to be caught escaped and I was the one who was detained." Rook wiped his eyes to make sure he was not seeing things again.

"Tough luck being in the vicinity of that incident then." Officer Weiss tried to lighten the mood.

"You could say I was in the wrong place at the wrong time." Rook scoffed it off.

"But I'm already over it. Since it's been half a decade since that incident, I was lucky to be picked for the RTR Program."

Rook looked around as he told his story.

Their cruiser stops at the complex parking lot for them to start their patrol.

"We'll start our patrol here on foot so let's start your day rookie." Officer Weiss grabbed his cap while fixing his tie before leaving.

Rook grabbed his cap as well and they left the cruiser by the parking spot. They walked towards the complex area to just do their routine check.

"Your first time doing this kind of patrol?" Asked Officer Weiss as they walked down a set of stairs to the park.

"Not really we were constantly ordered to do day and night patrols every day when there was no training scheduled. Other I'm either doing training or doing duty patrols." Rook kept on watching around the area as they were patrolling around the park.

"I see, how was training under the military felt like since you're gonna be part of our force? Since I heard it's a different monster when you trained as a cop from the beginning and trained under the military." Officer Weiss looked at the lake nearby.

"They gave us a special training specifically for both the military and for police work. Since we were the first few convicts under that program they thought it'd be better for us to learn both military tactics and police tactics if one or the other didn't work." Rook replied.

"Wait both military and police training? You took both?" Officer Weiss was surprised.

"Yeah, actually I was the only one who was transferred to become a cop. The others were picked for military work." Rook replied like it wasn't surprising.

"How many were you when you graduated?" Officer Weiss asked while stopping by the mobile police station by the newsstand.

Rook and Weiss stopped by to log their patrol by station as part of the route.

"5 of us were the only graduates and I'm the only one who became a cop. The rest went to the military and went towards their first tour."

The two continued to converse as they were patrolling but they stumbled upon a situation where a thief was trying to rob an old man. Rook immediately ran towards the situation. Officer Weiss tried to slow down Rook heading head first towards the criminal.

"Hey, Rook be careful that guy has augments!" Officer Weiss immediately scanned the criminal to inform Rook who was running at full speed.

Soon after Weiss radioed the station about the situation and called some backup.

"Hey, man you wouldn't want to mess with me unless you, WANT TO!" Said the criminal as he let go of the old man to throw a quick jab.

"His augments are on his arms he proceeds with caution!" Officer Weiss radioed Rook.

"You're too sloppy even with augments." Rook ducks the jab and hits the criminal with a hard uppercut sending him flying up.

Before the criminal went up too high he pulled the criminal by the cuffs of his shirt bringing him down to the pavement and detaining him.

"Sheesh, quite a harsh landing also great job Rook I guess?" As Officer Weiss cuffs the criminal that disables his augments.

Soon after backup arrived to recover the detained criminal and Rook had to explain his actions to Officer Weiss and his dispatch officer.

"Can you explain what did you today as a rookie that's quite a catch for your first time but you were supposed to be just watching how your partner does." The Dispatch officer explained Rook's position as a first-timer.

"Genuinely I was surprised you sprinted that quick to detain him like that. Do you have any augments? Wait let me just check real quick." Officer Weiss used his eye augment.

"No, I have zero augments. And I still had problems with my impulse since I was trained under the military so I may or may not have just acted upon myself." Rook shrugs off his action as an impulse mistake.

"No shit, you don't have any augments on you." Officer Weiss was surprised.

"Wait what? You're kidding? You're pretty good then Officer Rook you weren't kidding being trained by a military training officer. But once you return to the station you'll be given the standard issue augments everyone gets as an N.E.P.D Officer. Well, that's your first field experience. Welcome to the force, Officer Rook." The dispatch officer shook Rook's hands and left with the criminal detained.

"Let's get back to the station for the day. Since I got a lot of paperwork to do after your first arrest and your stunt. But you'll be meeting the Doc anyways to get your very first augments." Officer Weiss sighed after his work got added to another pile to do once they got back.

"I can't believe you have no augments on you. That's all-natural strength then if you were able to outpower someone with a Level 2 arm augments installed." Officer Weiss was surprised by that fact.

"They say it's a natural talent for me I was just heavily trained back in boot camp," Rook replied.

The two returned to their cruiser and drove back to the station and met up with their respective people for the day.

3:00 PM District 5's N.E.P.D's Augmentation Room.

"Hey Doc, its the rookie's turn to be augmented." An assistant brings Rook inside the doctor's quarters.

"You must be that rookie that took out that augmented criminal without any augments. Rook was it?" The doctor looked at Rook as he sat down by the bench.

"Instincts made me act the way I did against that criminal," Rook replied as the doctor started doing his check-up.

"Ah, instincts I haven't heard those words in years. Most rookie officers already have augments by the time they leave the academy and you're the exception. You left the academy without any augments installed onto you why?" Asked the doctor.

"They said that the base augments weren't worth it with my current ability it would only hinder my current abilities. That's as far as I remember what they said to me." Rook replied to the doctor as he was checking his ears.

"You're quite a rare breed of humans, not a lot seen anymore but you have to get augmented in one way or the other. We have our standard issue augment from MaxTech that connects to our database here that can allow you to communicate report and record incidents on the field with physical improvements to your abilities on the slightest bit. But..." As the doctor left the table to grab a package.

"But what Doc?" Asked Rook.

"We're not just installing one augment apparently your boss back in District 8 gave you a special present I haven't seen this product from MaxTech and it's labeled for you." The doctor reads the label on the box.

"I guess they gave me a present after I left the academy-" Rook was interrupted.

"Well, I'll be damned. They gave you a MaxTech Proto series Overclock V3." The doctor is impressed.

"Is that good?" Rook looked confused.

"Good? Heck, you can't buy this even on the black market." The doctor looked smug.

"I didn't expect they'd give me such a special part for just a lowly crum like me." Rook was astonished.

"Me neither but I guess they saw potential in you. Also, there are some auxiliary augments here so you'd properly sync with the Overclock V3. Well, let's start we don't have all day remove your shirt Rook." The doctor immediately grabbed his tools and began the transplant.
