Chapter 20 Delivering Meat to the Old Mansion

Chen Xiuhua immediately opened the door upon hearing the noise and saw Shitou smiling as she let him into the courtyard, "Shitou, what brings you here at this hour? Have you eaten yet? Your aunt cooked fried chicken for lunch, take some back with you."

The fish wasn't fresh after being kept for too long, so yesterday Zhao Yan cooked it, and today, the remaining wild chicken was also cleaned up.

Shitou shook his head and handed over the basket to Chen Xiuhua, "Grandma, my grandma asked me to bring some rabbit meat and wild duck eggs to help nourish my great-grandma and great-grandpa."

Upon receiving the basket and taking a look, Chen Xiuhua's eyes widened in surprise, "Why are there so many duck eggs?"

Shitou chuckled in delight, "They were all collected by my little aunt. My little aunt is really lucky, she always finds good things whenever she goes up the mountain."

Chen Xiuhua was completely surprised upon hearing this; just yesterday her daughter-in-law had mentioned Yingying catching wild game.

And today, stumbling upon wild duck eggs is indeed good luck!

"Yingying is indeed a lucky girl, first catching wild chickens and fish, and now finding so many wild duck eggs. Please thank your grandma for me."

"Shitou, has your aunt recovered?" Mrs. Xu was sixty-three years old this year and considered elderly in the village.

The elderly woman had white hair and gray temples; her dark face was thin and lined with wrinkles, showing a life well-lived, yet her smile was kind and gentle.

Shitou nodded and said obediently, "Grandma, my aunt is fine now."

Mr. Xu usually kept a stern face, causing the village children to avoid him; however, hearing that his granddaughter was fine, his face relaxed significantly, "That's good. Don't let her go near the river anymore."

"Yes, great-grandpa," Shitou replied immediately, avoiding looking directly at Mr. Xu.

"Moreover, I heard that Chen Yanran was pretending to be your little aunt's lifesaver? That new educated youth really has no shame; tell your little aunt to keep her distance from those types of people.

Especially that Dong Wenzhong, as long as I'm here, I won't let Yingying marry that boy, a rabbit who will amount to nothing," Mr. Xu said, getting a bit agitated and coughing several times.

Scared, Shitou nodded in agreement, promising to relay the message accurately when he got home.

Chen Xiuhua took out all the items and scooped a bowl of fried chicken into the basket, handing it over to Shitou.

Shitou, not daring to linger, took the basket and yelled towards Mrs. Xu and Mr. Xu, "Grandma, Grandpa, I'm leaving now."

Mrs. Xu responded loudly, "Be careful on the road."

Shitou nodded and quickly headed to the Lu Family's house.

Standing at the gate of the Lu Family, Shitou shouted, "Aunt Daya, my grandma invited you to come over for dinner."

At the Lu Family's dining table, all had thick millet rice except for Lu Daya and her brother Lu Aimin, who had a bowl of thin soup in front of them.

She was already accustomed to this life; just as she was about to drink her soup, she heard Shitou's voice, looked up at Mrs. Lu, and got up to open the door.

Mrs. Lu glared at her daughter, "Sit down, I'll open the door."

Lu Daya reluctantly nodded and sat back down in unease.

Mrs. Lu got up, opened the door, and upon seeing Shitou, she spoke with a smile, "Shitou, your Aunt Daya doesn't like eating out. Please tell your grandma to let her eat here instead."

Shitou was no fool and knew Mrs. Lu's schemes; he boldly spoke of his own grandfather, "My grandfather said that Aunt Daya must come over to our house for the meal.

My grandfather really wants to thank her personally for saving my little aunt. If she doesn't come, it means your family looks down on my grandfather and doesn't appreciate his gratitude."

Mrs. Lu became anxious upon hearing this; she certainly didn't look down on the captain; if this got out, she worried about his retaliation.

Observing Shitou, Mrs. Lu contained her anger, glanced at Lu Daya, and shouted, "Daya, are you dead? Didn't you see Shitou inviting you to eat, why are you still sitting there?"

Lu Daya got up and came over, looking at the onlookers around her, she said in a wronged tone, "Mom, wasn't it you who told me not to come out?"

Mrs. Lu was furious, this daughter was deliberately embarrassing her; indeed, daughters were a loss, only knowing how to humiliate their own parents.

"When did I stop you? Hurry up, don't keep your captain uncle waiting."

Lu Daya quickly nodded, glanced at Shitou, and signaled him to go first.

Shitou, being clever, picked up the basket and strode forward.

Mrs. Lu saw her daughter looking anxious and waved her hand, "Go on, hurry up."

After hearing this, Lu Daya immediately chased after Shitou.

After seeing her daughter leave, Mrs. Lu grumbled as she entered the yard, "That girl is doing this on purpose, she definitely wants to ruin my reputation."

Eldest Sister-in-law Lu looked gloomy and displeased, "Mom, you said Daya saved the captain's daughter, and this is the first time they sent some Malt Milk Essence and milk candy duck eggs.

Each time after that, they only gave treats to Daya. They obviously did it behind our backs because they were afraid we wouldn't let Daya eat. Why does the captain's family have to interfere so much!"

Brother Lu felt somewhat disappointed upon hearing this, he thought he might get some good stuff out of this talk.

Eldest Sister-in-law Lu, trying to stir up trouble, looked at Aimin, "I thought Laoer and Daya were very close, it turns out that's not the case!"

Aimin didn't respond, but lowered his head and sipped the soup from the bowl, a smirk of sarcasm appearing on his lips.

Lu Daya, feeling a bit uneasy, followed Shitou to the Xu Family's home. As soon as she entered the yard, she smelled the strong aroma of meat and swallowed her saliva, greeting everyone.

Upon seeing Lu Daya, Xu Ying immediately ran over affectionately, "Sister Daya, come sit next to me."

She pulled Lu Daya to sit next to her and placed a stool for her.

Eldest Sister-in-law Xu perceptively brought over a set of bowls and chopsticks for Lu Daya.

The Xu Family were all grateful towards Lu Daya.

Although Eldest Sister-in-law Xu didn't like her lazy and gluttonous little aunt, she wouldn't ever wish her dead, so she was grateful towards Lu Daya too, "Daya, just make yourself at home, don't be shy, eat whatever you want.

You saved our Yingying, and our whole family thanks you for it."

Mrs. Xu was very satisfied with what Eldest Sister-in-law Xu said, and she picked up a spoon and served Lu Daya a bowl of rabbit meat, "Hurry up and eat, serve yourself more if you finish, don't be reserved."

"Right, Daya, your sister-in-law is right, just like your own home."

Lu Daya smiled a little awkwardly at them and then picked up her chopsticks, "Thank you, uncle, aunt, thank you, sister-in-law."

Xu Ying took a multigrain bun for Daya and one for herself, and then started to eat heartily.

Lu Daya saw everyone else beginning to eat, and then she too started her meal.

As soon as she took a bite of the rabbit meat, the spiciness made her eyes red.

Xu Ying saw this and hurriedly asked, "Sister Daya, can you handle the spice? If not, I'll get you a glass of water to dip it in."

Lu Daya paused, confused, would standing up make it less spicy?

She stood up with a puzzled look while Xu Ying's family watched curiously.

"Daya, are you standing up for something?" Mrs. Xu asked curiously.

Lu Daya shook her head.

Mrs. Xu immediately said, "Nothing's wrong then, sit down and eat."
