Chapter 10: Echoes of Sacrifice
The lab was deadeningly silent. The usually bright hum of the temporal machinery now seemed muffled in the wake of Anna's absence. Eli stood at the edge of the console, his fingers brushing the space where she had been just moments ago. In the light of the stabilizing timeline, soft, wavering shadows fell as if even the universe mourned the loss of her.
She knew exactly what she was doing," Samara said, the first to break the silence. Her voice was firm, but her eyes shone bright with unshed tears. "She made her choice to save us all."
Eli nodded, though his jaw was clamped tightly shut. "She shouldn't have had to.
Graves crossed his arms, the stoic mask not quite able to cover his flicker of emotion. "We lost a fighter. But she'd want us to keep going. We owe her that much.
A Ripple in Time
The lab's monitors flared to life, displaying the stabilizing timeline. Samara was studying the readouts, her brow furrowed.
"The timeline is holding, but." she trailed off.
"But what?" Graves asked, stepping closer.
Samara gestured to a subtle ripple in the display—a faint distortion moving through the temporal map. "Something's still not right. Anna's actions should have completely neutralized the Syndicate's interference, but this ripple suggests there's still an anomaly.
Eli turned to her then, darkening. "You're telling me they're still out there?"
"Not exactly," Samara said. "It's more like. a remnant. A fragment of their influence hanging around in the timeline. It could be tiny, or it could fester into another disaster.
Messages from the Past
As they were talking, an alert suddenly sounded. A small device on the console began to flash—a beacon-like object that Anna had left before the mission.
"What is that?" Eli asked, snatching it up.
Samara's eyes widened. "It's a time capsule. Anna must have set it before we jumped into the future."
Eli clicked it on; a holograph of Anna sputtered into vision. She was faded but distinct, her voice sweetly sad.
"If you're seeing this, it means I'm gone," she began. "I knew the risks when I made this decision, and I don't regret it. But I also knew that the fight was not over. The reach of the Syndicate is too big, and even if we destroyed the Nexus Collider, there are more dangers ahead."
The team in silent state continued to listen to Anna as she proceeded.
"I left coordinates behind—places in the timeline where their influence might resurface. You have to move fast. Stop them before they can rebuild. And, Eli." Her voice softened. "Don't weigh yourself with my sacrifice. Use it as fuel for the fight."
The message ended as the team stared up at the glowing device.
New Coordinates
Samara brought up the coordinates Anna had encoded. "She's marked three critical points in the timeline: one in the distant past, one in the present, and one in the far future."
Eli's eyes narrowed as he weighed the data. "We split up. Cover more ground and eliminate the threats before they take root."
Graves shook his head. "Splitting up makes us vulnerable. We don't know what we're walking into.
Samara's eyes flickered upwards. "He's right, but so is Eli. Inaction and much more would get the Syndicate on their feet again. We will have to move with precision; hopefully, with the temporal anchors, we regroup should that go awry."
Eli stepped one pace forward, his voice now filled with resolution. "We will make it right for Anna. We mustn't let her sacrifice be in vain.
First Mission: Ancient Roots
The first set of coordinates he had identified was 1347 AD, on the eve of the Black Death. According to Anna's information, the Syndicate had originally planted operatives here to control the plague's spread as a means of controlling population growth in the long term.
Samara plotted the jump parameters. "This one's delicate. Highly volatile point in history. One misstep, and the course of humanity will never be the same."
Eli powers up. "Then let's make sure every move is the right one."
Graves smiled wryly. "1347, huh? I bet they don't have energy shields."
Foreshadowing the Future
The team prepared for the jump, and the temporal map fluttered once more. That ripple had grown a little larger now, its edges pulsing ominously.
Samara frowned. "Whatever this anomaly is, it's tied to the Syndicate. If we don't neutralize it soon, it could unravel everything we've fought for."
Eli laid a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "One step at a time. First, the plague; then the anomaly.
The lights in the chamber began to dim as the jump sequence began. The team steeled themselves for whatever lay in wait at the bottom of history.
