Chapter 41: Test of shadows

Kaelen's thoughts were a tumultuous sea of ambition, uncertainty, and hunger as he emerged from the shadows of his cave. The world outside had not changed, but he had. The thirst within him still clawed at his mind, urging him to give in, to feed, to revel in the raw power that now pulsed through his veins. But he resisted. For now.

He needed to test himself—test the limits of his new powers.

He had always been a calculated individual, one who understood that power meant nothing unless it could be wielded effectively. But now, with the blood of an ancient vampire coursing through him, he realized that his previous calculations were insufficient. His mind had been shattered by the Primogenitor's revelation, and the thirst was but a manifestation of that deeper chaos that was now his reality. The world around him no longer held the same meaning. The rules had shifted. He was a being apart from humans now, a creature of darkness, and he needed to understand just how far he could push this power before it consumed him completely.

He chose a small village in the heart of the forest as his first testing ground. Quiet, isolated, a place where the common folk lived unaware of the storms brewing just beyond their borders. The villagers had no connection to his ambitions—they were insignificant in the grand scheme of things, mere pawns.

And yet, they would be the ones to help him gauge the true extent of his new abilities.

---

The village was nestled in a valley, surrounded by dense trees and fog that rolled in from the nearby mountains. Its quiet beauty was broken only by the distant cries of animals and the soft murmur of village life. As Kaelen approached the edge of the settlement, he allowed his senses to sharpen. His hearing, once merely human, was now far beyond that. He could hear every breath, every footstep, the rustling of clothes in the wind.

The village was small, but it was enough.

A young couple passed by, their laughter light, unaware of the predator in their midst. Kaelen's eyes flicked toward them, his senses heightened. His fangs, longer than they had been before, itched as if urging him to strike, to sink them deep into their warm, fragile skin.

He resisted the urge.

Not yet.

---

Kaelen moved quickly, blending with the shadows. The villagers were easy to avoid, and soon, he was standing at the heart of the village, just behind the village square. It was dark now, the sun having dipped below the horizon, and the flickering light of torches cast long shadows across the cobbled streets. The air had grown thick, the warmth of the day replaced by the cool bite of night.

He found what he sought: a group of five villagers, sitting around a fire, speaking in hushed voices. They were oblivious to his presence, their minds focused on their small, insignificant lives. Perfect. Kaelen smiled to himself as he approached from behind, silently creeping closer until he was mere feet away from the group.

The power surged through him as he reached out with his mind. The shadows answered, rising to his will, swirling around him in a dark, almost tangible form. His fingers extended, and a thin thread of blood magic shot from his palm, wrapping around one of the villagers, a young man with a nervous expression. Kaelen's lips curled as he twisted the magic, forcing the villager to stand and move as he willed.

The young man gasped, his body moving of its own accord, a puppet on invisible strings.

Kaelen's voice, cold and commanding, echoed in the quiet of the night. "Stand still."

The man froze, his eyes wide with terror. The other villagers hadn't yet noticed, still murmuring amongst themselves. But Kaelen didn't need them to notice. He wanted to test his power, and for that, these innocents were perfect. They were the first pieces in the grand game he would play.

Without touching the man, Kaelen called upon the blood magic within him. The magic was raw and hungry, willing to obey his commands. His eyes glowed with a red intensity as he forced the man to kneel in front of him. The others around the fire stopped talking, now aware of the strange presence that surrounded them.

"Who are you?" one of the women asked nervously, her voice trembling.

Kaelen didn't answer. He simply extended his hand toward the man, his fingers twitching. The villager gasped again, a strangled cry escaping his lips as Kaelen manipulated him further. The blood magic was stronger than he had anticipated, twisting and pulling at the man's very essence. Kaelen could feel the power, feel it writhing beneath his fingertips, as though the very fabric of life itself was being unraveled.

His smile grew wider, a feral edge creeping into his expression. "Do not worry. You will be the first to experience what it means to bow before me."

He released the magic, sending the villager crashing to the ground in a heap, gasping for air as though his life had been drained from him. The others screamed in panic, but Kaelen did not move. He simply watched, his eyes glimmering with a cold, calculating light. He could sense their fear—their confusion.

Their weakness.

---

Without warning, Kaelen extended his hand once more, his fingers curling into claws as he summoned the darkness. The shadows around him obeyed instantly, surging forward like a living thing, wrapping around the villagers like an unholy blanket. They screamed as they were swallowed by the darkness, their forms writhing in panic as Kaelen tightened his grip on them.

One of the villagers—a middle-aged man—attempted to draw a blade, but Kaelen's power was too great. The sword was wrenched from his hand, the blade snapping under the weight of the dark force that now controlled the air itself. The shadows twisted around the man's body, forcing him to his knees, his face contorted in terror.

Kaelen's eyes gleamed red as he whispered the words, the command seeping from his lips like venom. "Kneel before your master."

The villagers had no choice but to obey.

He could feel their blood pumping, the life within them. The magic thrummed with power as it flowed from his fingertips. And yet... it still wasn't enough. He needed more. More power. He needed to understand the depths of what he could truly command.

Without hesitation, Kaelen allowed his fangs to emerge, the hunger within him boiling to the surface. He stepped forward and sank his teeth into the neck of the nearest villager, the blood flowing thick and warm as he drank deeply. The taste was intoxicating, the rush of power almost overwhelming.

The village was his testing ground, a place where he could indulge in the raw power of his new form. He could feel the life slipping away from the man in his grasp, but it didn't matter. He wasn't killing them—he was *learning*. With every drop of blood he took, Kaelen felt more powerful, more attuned to the dark forces that surged within him.

When he finally pulled away, the villager collapsed, barely alive, a broken husk. The others were still under his control, their minds shattered by the terror and power he had unleashed upon them.

Kaelen stepped back, a cold smile curling his lips.

This was just the beginning.

The village was only the first of many places he would test his strength.

He would conquer the world, but first, he would learn to master the darkness within him.

And none would stand in his way.
