In the Temple
The air crackled with energy as the seal beneath Kaito's feet pulsed violently. Each wave of light surged through the room, making the ancient carvings on the walls shimmer. Ayame knelt beside the seal, her hands hovering above it as she tried to decipher the glowing runes.
"This is bad," she muttered, her voice tight with urgency. "The seal is destabilizing faster than I thought."
Kaito's grip tightened on Kagekiri. "Can you stop it?"
"I... I don't know," Ayame admitted. "This kind of magic is ancient. It's tied to forces I barely understand."
Kaede stepped closer, her amulet gleaming faintly as if resonating with the seal's energy. "What if I can help? This amulet, it was my mother's. She always said it was tied to the old ways."
Ayame glanced at the amulet, her brow furrowing. "It's possible. If it's connected to the same kind of magic that created this seal, it might stabilize it... temporarily."
Kaito looked between them, his jaw set. "Temporarily isn't good enough. If we can't fix it, what happens when it breaks?"
Ayame's face darkened. "If this seal breaks, whatever it's holding back will be unleashed. And if the empire's records are accurate, it's one of the three shadowborn, a being of immense power."
Kaede's voice trembled. "The weakest of the three... but still powerful enough to destroy entire cities."
Kaito's gaze flickered to the glowing seal, his mind racing. "Then we need to act now. Ayame, Kaede, do whatever you can to hold this seal together. I'll keep watch."
Outside the Temple
The imperial soldiers had encircled the temple, their torches casting long shadows against the jagged rocks. The captain stood at the forefront, his sword drawn as he surveyed the ancient structure.
"Hold your positions," he commanded, his voice steady. "We wait until they come out. The emperor wants them alive, but if that seal breaks, we'll have more than rebels to deal with."
One of the lieutenants approached cautiously. "Sir, the energy emanating from the temple... it's growing stronger. Shouldn't we fall back?"
The captain's eyes narrowed. "No. If the seal breaks, we'll use the chaos to capture the princess and the blade. Whatever emerges will be a useful distraction."
A sharp cry echoed from within the temple, sending a shiver through the ranks. The soldiers gripped their weapons tighter, their confidence wavering.
Back Inside
Kaede held the amulet aloft, her face pale as she channeled its energy into the seal. The amulet's glow merged with the runes, creating a temporary barrier that steadied the pulsing light. Sweat dripped down her brow, but she didn't falter.
"It's working," Ayame said, her hands moving quickly as she traced symbols in the air. "But it won't last long. We need a permanent solution."
Kaito paced near the entrance, his ears straining for any sound from outside. Kagekiri hummed in his hand, its whispers louder than ever.
"You can't stop this," the blade murmured. "Let it break. Face the shadowborn. Prove your strength."
Kaito shook his head, muttering under his breath. "Not now."
"Talking to your sword again?" Kaede's voice was strained but teasing.
"Better the sword than the soldiers outside," Kaito replied, his tone tense. "They're waiting for us to slip up."
Ayame looked up sharply. "Soldiers? How close?"
"Close enough," Kaito said grimly. "We don't have much time."
The seal pulsed violently, and a crack appeared in its surface. A low, guttural growl echoed from below, sending a chill through the chamber.
"That's not good," Ayame said, her voice trembling. "If it breaks completely—"
She didn't finish her sentence. The crack widened, and a burst of dark energy shot upward, sending all three of them flying backward.
The Shadowborn Awakens
The seal shattered with a deafening roar, and from the void below emerged a towering figure cloaked in shadow. Its form was barely humanoid, its eyes glowing with an unnatural crimson light. The air grew colder, and the weight of its presence made it hard to breathe.
Kaito staggered to his feet, Kagekiri's glow intensifying. The blade whispered eagerly. "This is what I've been waiting for. Draw me fully, and we'll strike it down together."
Kaede scrambled to Kaito's side, her amulet still glowing faintly. "We can't fight that thing. Not here."
"We don't have a choice," Kaito said, stepping forward.
Ayame joined them, her staff crackling with light. "If we're going to survive this, we need to work together."
The shadowborn let out an ear-splitting roar, its massive form advancing toward them. Kaito raised Kagekiri, its blade cutting through the dark like a beacon.
"Kaede, Ayame, stay behind me," he said, his voice steady despite the fear gnawing at his chest. "I'll hold it off as long as I can."
Kaede's hand tightened around her amulet, her determination hardening. "We're not leaving you to face this alone."
Ayame nodded, her grip on her staff firm. "Together, we might just have a chance."
As the shadowborn loomed closer, the three stood their ground, united against the darkness. Outside, the imperial soldiers hesitated, their torches flickering as they felt the tremors from within.
The battle for survival had begun.
